Because of the lack of information on England/Wales indexes and certificates, I have found their Census to provide the best source for initial research on English family. After many moons of thinking about it I eventually decided to subscribe to ancestry.co.uk (because they have indexed census data for 1851 to 1901) and my reseach went ahead at a very fast rate thereafter. I have also found many resources and assistance on the RootsChat forum site. There are a number of individuals and groups now transcribing parish records. Although not a substitute for seeing the real record, when you live in Australia and the LDS do not have a film for your parish, they are the best alternative.

Some LDS centres and local libraries provide free access to ancestry, so it is not always necessary to be a subscriber.

Sites I use alot for English research include google (amazing what it will find)
FreeBDM http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
FreeCen http://freecen.rootsweb.com/
Genuki http://www.genuki.org.uk/
IGI Batch numbers http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... umbers.htm
http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/ (pay site)
UK BDM http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/
Historical directories http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd ... cation.asp
Online parish clerks (this is Kent - there are others) http://www.kent-opc.org.uk/index.htm - I have found Dorset extremely good for my research
RootsChat http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php
ancestry www.ancestry.co.uk - mainly a pay site but has a free copy of FreeBDM and at the moment free access to the England/Wales Indexes - only the 1st and last entries of each page are indexed - as per 1837online - and there are many errors in the indexes.

I guess we shouldn't omit the national archives!
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
and you can search the 1901 census for free - but pay to see the image
http://www.1901censusonline.com/
To order the certificates that cost 7 pounds and contain very little
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certi ... efault.asp
The Family Records Centre has details of what is on those certificates
http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/topics/bmd.htm

(Apologies if I have repeated any)

Useful website

Another useful website for information on English research is the Family Records Centre site. No searchable data, but reliable and up to date information on the main record sources, including some not held at the FRC
