I am not sure this is the right Margaret Reid/Malcolm.
Yes she came from Irvine and about this time.
I have found Elizabeth and Agnes's marriage both July 1858 and both are still Reid - and their parents are as expected David and Mary Reid (nee Brown).
I hoped that Mary had remarried by the time Margaret married in 1868, but the 1881 has her still as a widow.
So where does James Malcolm come into the equation?
Margaret Malcolm/Reid who are you really??.....

Hi Julie
It's quite possible that Margaret was the product of a relationship between the widowed Mary Reid and the unmarried James Malcolm. Since Margaret's birth does not seem to be registered and the death of David Reid is not found then this can only be guessed at. It seems quite convincing that Margaret seemed to acknowlege her father might have been James Malcolm. It would be worth a check to see if James Malcolm ever married anyone else.....
Best wishes
Jean

I have looked at a couple of James Donaldson's in 1851 census - there are none in Irvine but 2 candidates living in areas close to Irvine - both unmarried, registered at lodgers!!
Is there any way of finding out when David Reid Died?? If I knew he has died before Margaret was born!!! The WE would know!!
The mystrey continues until tomorrow...

Jean
So sorry about the Donaldson/Malcolm thing
He is definately MALCOLM even if I put Donaldson !!!!
The problem is I am trying to sort out a similiar mystery birth for a John Donaldson and it doesn't take much to confuse me.
Thanks for the Census information, I was only thinking about that driving home from work in the car and you had beaten me to it - though very much appreciated.
Children were usually named after their parents, as Margaret was a girl was she named after 'James' mother?? A long shot I know but oh well..
Thanks for all your help
Julie
