Wow guys, this is fantastic information, so much and so quick!
I will check out all the information, thanks for the websites etc.
I know that he was in the Australian forces but really wondered if, as a local he would have been included on a local memorial.
I have someone who is going to check the census returns for me so that I can find out more about his family.
I am wondering if possibly there was some sort of family link between this man and great grandfather whose parents were originally from Scotland, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
I will keep hunting.
Would it be possible to contact any family members still in Alloa to see if they could identify the photo as definitely the same man? This is the only Lieutenent William Grant that I can find a death for, there are a number of private W Grants killed in action.
Thanks heaps again

Is there someone from Alloa?.....

It would make the most sense that there is a family link. I know that greatgrandfather's mother came to New Zealand as a small child and have assumed that his father possibly did as well as there was a child of the same name on the same ship, but as his name was John Henderson it is by no means certain. One of those things that I meant to follow up sometime, and it looks as though that time has come!!
If my people are the ones that I think they are, then these two men must be 2nd cousins at the closest.
Cheers

Hardly seems to make sense at the 2nd cousin level, does it? Could it have been something so simple as someone who knew of the Alloa connection sending him the cutting ? - which got put on one side ..........

My partner, who works in Alloa, has managed to establish that the Grant family are still living in the Tobias Bauchop house that is mentioned in the link I gave you. If you would like to contact them I can send you the address in a PM or you could email me the details and I could get my partner to deliver it to them -just let me know how you'd like to proceed with this.

David, I note that you comment on the 1901 census information. Would you be able to send me the details please?
Thanks all

The 1901 census image is waiting for you at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Search for a William GRANT of around the right age, and limit the search to Clackmannanshire, and Alloa. There's also an entry in 1891.

Thanks to Caroline I have now made contact with the family. They cannot immediately identify the man in the photo but are going to look out some old family photos and get back to me.
Fingers crossed that they come up with a match. I am fairly certain that it must be the correct man, he is the only one I can find on the CWG site that was a Lieutenant.
Thanks all
