1851 entry on Scotlandspeople .....

I love the way I'm always learning new things on here. I had looked at the Scottish Genealogy Society online shop in the past but hadn't realised that you didn't have to be a member to use their library or that they had the Logie OPRs and 1851 census. Thank you, Andrew. I will definitely be paying them a visit.

Hi Elisabeth,

If you haven't been to the SGS Library before, then be aware that it is well hidden away. From George IV Bridge, go along Victoria Terrace, the pavement above Victoria Street. At the furthest end the pavement narrows and heads away from Victoria Street. The SGS Library is at the start of the narrow section.

They have a vast amount of information in their small premises. Apart from their collection of OPR and Census microfilms, there are many shelves full of genealogy books. If you tell them it is your first visit, they usually give you a guided tour of their facilities.

If I remember rightly, a doantion is sought from non-members. Or when you have seen what they have, you may want to consider a subscription.

Hi all
As far as I'm aware it costs a non-member £5 a day to use the SGS library & all the other info they have there.

Visiting the Library and Family History Centre

You do not need to make an appointment in order to use the facilties at the Library and Family History Centre. The charge to non-members is £5 per day or part thereof. A photocopier is available (20 pence per A3 sheet and 10 pence per A4 sheet) and microfilm and microfiche prints can also be made. Visitors are reminded to bring a notepad and a pencil. The use of pens and biros is not permitted. The consumption of food or drink at the Library and Family History Centre is not permitted and refreshments are not available. There are numerous restaurants, cafés etc. within easy walking distance.

They have a full set of OPRs for all of Scotland, but not a full set of Census films, yet. I joined a few years ago just for the access to the OPRs, which at £16 per year seemed pretty good value! I have found many other useful items in their library when I've been there & I've always felt I've had my money's worth out of my annual membership! Depends how often you go to Edinburgh though!!!

Just being able to see the OPRs would be worth the money. I know that Logie is available at NRH but there are so many births, marriages and deaths that I want to look up when I eventually visit NRH that I know I won't get round to the parish registers.

I have just had another reply from Scotlandspeople
"Hi
I've found them on the microfilm! They are in 'Clackmannanshire part of Logie' which is after the 'end ' of RD 374 and therefore may possibly not have been imaged and is definitely not indexed.
William is a woollen weaver and all the family were born in Menstrie, Clackmannan.
The relevant people know about this and it is being dealt with."

I have thanked them for their swift and helpful response.
