I could not find William John Snr nor Jnr on the 1901 census either but baby Margaret was born on 16/10/1900 at 298 Castle Street, Dennistoun, baby Catherine was born on on 3/11/1901 at 184 Parliamentary Road, St Rollox and in this instance daddy has signed the birth registration whereas with Margaret it was mummy who signed. I'll assume you have the DC's for him and Margaret - if not - give me a shout.

Happy hunting

Regards

The addresses that your good namesake Annette gave will hopefully have William jnr & Margaret at one of them!
If not, then there is this...but i'm really scraping the barrel now....
-
1901 census 644-6 Ed 44 p 5 (St. Rollox)
William McNIVEN 21
Margaret, 20
Maggie, under 1
-
Jack
ps - sorry, can't say i do remember a Police Book, but that's not unusual for me. :?

Hello Jack,

You know I saw McNiven and thought that was really stretching it, but with the enumeration district for that family being so close to the birth info Annette found I think there is a strong chance it's them.

I'll resist the temptation to spend more money on SP till I have a look at the film tomorrow at The Mitchell if I get the chance.

Cheers and I'll let you know how I get on.
:D

Hello Jean,

Excellent stuff Jean :!: :D :D Thanks for that.

When I told my friend I was having trouble finding them she said she thought they came from Stornoway. Boy is she in for a surprise.

That makes both her mum's grandfather's born in England. And she thought she was a wee Scots/Irish mixture.
Anyway what a relief finding them it was driving me crazy.

What a team - thanks everybody.

Best wishes,
Annette M

It was far from unusual for a family to drop the "Mac" or "Mc".

Another factor is that such a name is often written with a distinct space between the M[a]c and the rest of the name, - thus " Mc Niven", - which is often trancribed as plain "Niven".

In this case poeple saw their new name "Niven" - liked it and continued with it ?!

Hi Annette,
Could this be his father, in the army in London in 1881? That would explain the birth in England.

District Royal Artillery Barracks 2, Woolwich Dockyard, Woolwich, London
William Macnivett, Unm, 22, Gunner Royal Artillery, born in Scotland

If this is him, it looks like his parents might not have been quite yet married when wee William was born...

Regards,
Sarah

Hello Sarah,

Thanks for that, it looks very likely. I can't find that name born in Scotland around 1859 so it looks as though it could be registered under one of the varients or he was illegitimate too.

Kind regards,
