Hello Karen,

Do you know I don't have a clue. I'm they've been indexed to around 1920ish.

Maybe Jack will be able to tell us more.

Kind regards,

According to the Mitchell Library Poor Law Archives webpage:
  • Glasgow, 1851-1948
  • Barony, 1861-1898 (when it united with Glasgow)
  • Govan, 1876-1930 (when it united with Glasgow)
  • former county councils of Bute, Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire. Many of these applications date back to the beginning of the new poor law in 1845

All the best,

Hi Karen
According to the Cooncil ... the Glasgow records go up to 1948.
But there is a closure of 75 years for adults and 100 years for children.

Jim
researching
McIntyre, Menzies, Cowley, Pearson, Copland, McCammond, Forbes, Edgar etc. in Scotland
Skinner in Northumberland

Yes I saw all that info on the website but I know they are only indexed to the 1920's so I was confused. :? (Doesn't take much).

I completely forgot about closure - thanks Jim.

Hi Cathy,
Do you know if John 3yrs & Thomas 8mos QUIN (ages in 1891) lived to after 1901?

Did Ellen (b.1897) survive to after 1901?

And when did wee Christina McLEOD (b.1900) die in 1901?
Was it before or after the census night of 31st March?

Thanks Cathy,
What a pity Christina just missed the census - poor wee soul.
Do you have this census? Might be coincidence, but ages etc. fit.
Oddly i can't see an application for either of them.

1901 census 646-2 Ed 80 p 25 (Govan)
Govan Poor House, Merryflats.
John QUIN, inmate, 13, scholar, b Glasgow, LKS
Thomas QUIN, inmate, 10, scholar, b Glasgow, LKS

So we know young Ellen/Helen is somewhere in 1901...!

Thanks Jack,
I didn't have that. Although I printed off a load of Quin / Mcleods
trying to match up the numbers.
Time to get the old plastic out again.

Wee Helen

Post by nelmit » Mon Jan 22, 2007 3:59 pm

Hello Cathy,

Still nothing on Peter I'm afraid.

I had a look at the other application Helen made in 1890 but it does not even mention Peter's name. The application was beautifully written and gives info on her siblings names. I didn't have time to transcribe it but the number is D HEW 10/4/80 page 258 if you are interested in getting a copy.

If you want the siblings' names I will get them next time.

I found a very short application for wee Helen (under the name of Helen Quin) made on 10th July 1901. It said she was born 13th July 1896 in Govan Poorhouse :? :? . Maybe this is different Helen but I don't think so.

Anyway, it stated that the child was illegitimate and separated from her mother Helen Quin who was presently in Govan Poorhouse.

Next entry was 14th June 1906 - 3/- for 5 weeks
then Dec 15th 1910 - Off working.

Not much I'm afraid but every little snippet helps I suppose.

Glad you found John and James. Their exact dates of birth are given on that other application.

Kind regards,
Annette M
