Thanks Margaret,
I'd hoped the 1871 might've helped for 1881, but seemingly doesn't.
Is this below what is shown on the 1871 census page? Coatbridge?
Have i got it right on names & ages etc.?
--
Felix McSHANE, 34, b Ireland
Elizabeth McSHANE, 37, b Airdrie or New Monkland
Felix McSHANE, 11
Ann McSHANE, 9
George McSHANE, 7
Sarah McSHANE, 5
Elizabeth McSHANE, 3
Mary McSHANE, 2
--
'Spose these have to be asked!
Do you know for certain that some of the children married / died in Scotland?
Or that parents definitely died in Scotland too?
--
Just trying to make sure they never left the country!
A quick search for them in later Scottish censuses isn't showing anything positive.

Thanks Jack Yes thats what the 1871 reads. Not in the 1881 or 1891 census. Dont know for certain anything about the family. Elizabeth was my gg aunt. Maybe they went to Ireland for all i know. Could be because I cannot find her parents after 1881 either and they were born in Ireland.

Hi Margaret,
I can only guess that Felix McSHANE & your G-Gr aunt Elizabeth McGILL left Scotland sometime after 1871.
Unless the family are well hidden under some other name....seems a bit doubtful though.

A quick look at the 1880s censuses for England, US & Canada don't show them.
And sadly the 1881 Irish census hasn't survived - the first available is 1901.

Hope someone will have an idea on what you could best do next.

Hi Margaret and Jack,
After trying vainly, like Jack, to find them in 1880 or 1881, I finally, in desperation, decided to forget about Felix Sr and Elizabeth and try to find the children later on to see where they had gone. Could this be your Felix Jr. in 1910? Some of the dates are slightly off, but that is to be expected...

1910
1624 Poland Ave, Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio
Phillix McShane, head, 50, 23 years of present marriage, born in Scotland, parents also(?!), came over in 1870, naturalized, Puddler in a mill
Mary __, wife, 46, 23 years of present marriage, had 10 children, 9 still living, born in Scotland, parents also, came over in 1865
George, son, 23, born in Ohio, Fireman in fire dept
Patrick, son, 20, born in Ohio, Fireman working steam shovel
Elizabeth, daughter, 18, born in Ohio, packer in Wouth(?) works
John, son, 15, born in Ohio
Frank, son, 13, born in Ohio
Leon, son, 7, born in Ohio
Catherine, daughter, 9, born in Ohio
Mary, daughter, 4, born in Ohio
Ann, daughter, 2, born in Ohio

Now I'll try to work backward and see if I can find them in earlier censuses with the additional information.
All the best,
Sarah

Okay, this is looking better! This character was indexed as "Arc McShane"... but how they got "Arc" I'm not sure. Actually, how they got anything is unclear! His first name is all scribbled over.

1900
408 Campbell Street, Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio
McShane ????x, head, born May 1840, age 60, married for 31 years, born in Ireland, parents also, came to U.S. in 1870, laborer
Elizabeth, wife, born Apr 1850, age 50, had 8 (or 9?) children, only 2 still living, born in Ireland, parent's also, came to U.S. in 1870
Parich, son, born Mar 1876, age 24, born in Ohio, laborer
Francis, daughter, born Dec 1878, age 21, born in Ohio, servant

And now Felix Jr:

1900
1624 Poland Ave, Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio
McShane (illegible, indexed as "H"), head, born Nov 1858, age 41, married 13 years, born in Scotland, parents in Ireland, came to U.S. in 1870, works in mill boiler room
Margurite, wife, born Sep 1854, age 36, married 13 years, had 6 children, 6 still living, born in Scotland, parents in Ireland, came to U.S. in 1865
George, son, born Feb 1888, age 12, born in Ohio
Patrick, son, born Mch 1891, age 9, born in Ohio
Elizabeth, daughter, born Mch 1892, age 7, born in Ohio
John, son, born Sept 1895, age 4, born in Ohio
Frank, son, born Dec 1897, age 2, born in Ohio
Mary, daughter, born Feb 1899, age 1, born in Ohio

All of these are incredibly messy... I may or may not have copied down the information correctly.

I'll try to keep going back...
Regards,
Sarah

Well, well... in 1880 Felix is indexed as Felix Melehans  On the page itself it looks like McChan
I'm beginning to think they made a special effort in Youngstown to hire the enumerators with the worst handwriting and spelling skills...

1880
Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio
McChan, Felix, 43, miner, born in Ireland, parents also
Elizabeth, 41, wife, keeping house, born in Scotland
Fhelix, 26, son, miner, born in Scotland
Anna, 18, daughter, home, born in Scotland
George, 17, son, miner, born in Scotland, father in Ireland, mother in Scotland
Mary, 11, daughter, school, born in Scotland
Patrick, 5, son, home, born in Ohio
Fransis, 2, daughter, home, born in Ohio
John, 10/12 (born in March), son, home, born in Ohio

I just had to zoom forward to 1920 to see how far they were living from my mother, who was also in Youngstown in 1920 as a wee thing. (2.48 miles according to mapquest :D )

Meet the McShave family!!! (that's how they are indexed this time, but it is clearly McShane)

1920
1624 Poland Ave, Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio
McShane Felix, head, 56, came to U.S. in 1880, naturalized in 1886, born in Ireland, parents also, engineer in steel mill
Margaret, wife, 54, came to U.S. in 1880, naturalized in 1886, born in Ireland, parents also
George, son, 32, born in Ohio, parents in Ireland, brakeman on railroad
Patrick, son, 29, born in Ohio, parents in Ireland, truck driver
Elizabeth, daughter, 26, born in Ohio, parents in Ireland, press feeder in printing office
John, son, 24, born in Ohio, parents in Ireland, apprentice in steel mill
Frank, son, 22, born in Ohio, parents in Ireland, fireman on railroad
Catherine, daughter, 18, born in Ohio, parents in Ireland, sales lady in dept store
Leo, son, 22, born in Ohio, parents in Ireland, salesman, dry good store
Margareth, daughter, 13, born in Ohio, parents in Ireland
Anna, daughter, 11, born in Ohio, parents in Ireland
Skelly, Elizabeth, niece, 14, born in Ohio, parents in Ireland
--- Verona, niece, 11, born in Ohio, parents in Ireland

So are those nieces from the McShane side of the family or from Felix's wife's side?

After that flurry of activity, I don't seem to find anything more :( I can't find death records for Felix & Elizabeth, nor evidence that they survived until 1910. I did find some death records for the children and grandchildren, which I can give you if you like, but none for the main actors in this production. Given the wild spellings I have found for this family, it is highly likely I have missed them, though I have tried all sorts of searches. The Ohio death index is only online from 1908, so if they both died before that you will need to order the film from LDS to have a look. Given the way that family seemed to stick together, I would be very surprised if they died anywhere but Youngstown, Ohio... but under what name?

Got to go do something else now  although the weather obliged by raining so hard I couldn't do the things I was supposed to do outside :D It seems to be letting up now though...
Have fun sorting out this lot!
All the best,
Sarah
