And I take it she was not Elizabeth Taylor Hardie... Well, at least it is a lead in Scotland as well. Have you found David in 1901 in Scotland?

Sarah

P.S. Brilliant, Jean! You got 'im! :D Do you see Elizabeth anywhere?

Hi Jean,

Yes indeedy!

Father, William John Hardie and mother Catherine Muir.

Oh Sarah, I've only just scrolled down and seen your post re WW1...that is him 100%. 'Lizzie' was his wee sister, 10 years his junior. Thank you so much I'd never have known where to find that or ....well...do any of it. :D :D :D [woohoo]

Is there any way I can obtain the info from the draft records? What sort of info do they hold? Och I'm so excited.

Donna

oops, we've overlapped again.

I've got Elizabeth Taylor Hardie, born in 1890, sadly less than a month after her dad drowned in the Clyde. She was born, married & died in Scotland, as did her only surviving sister, Janet ferguson Hardie, my great granny.

[woohoo]
Check your email and I'll show you what I've got. Not sure how much more there is to be found. I think the registration cards are it, unless he was actually drafted, which I doubt.

Sarah

Thank you so much, I'd really have got nowhere without the help of you and Jean and please feel free to butt in on any of my threads if we get those results!! :D :D :D :D

Many many thanks

Hi Donna :D
Looks like they (or Ancestry) has Lizzie's age a bit off... Then again, 4 is a wee bit young to be a "scholar" (although I've seen some 2-yr olds with that occupation )

1901
14 Springvale St, Saltcoats, Ayrshire
Kate Russell, 52, Head, born Stevenston, Ayrshire
David Hardee, 20, Son, born Stevenston, Ayrshire, Slater
Lizzie Hardee, 4, Daur, born Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scholar

Hi again,
There may be some interesting things to be found on the Yakima County GenWeb site : http://www.rootsweb.com/~wayakima/
Also, I once ordered an obituary from the Yakima Valley Genealogical Society and they were very nice. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wayvgs/

That said, I don't see your David in the Washington death records... so did he go elsewhere later? :-k

Sarah

Sarah,

I'd like to say it's just that we are 'dead clever' but it's Ancestry making it up as they go along again!

In fairness to them I have a copy of that from SP and it's an 11 but as it's been crossed through you'd have to look twice to know whether it is 4 or 11.

Sarah,

I've just looked on the LDS for the US Social Security Death Index and he doesn't appear there. That said I've no idea how complete that it and the Y O D all seem to be from 1950 or so onwards, perhaps he passed away before then.

Mmmmm :-k :-k indeed.

Hi Donna,
Here's the blurb about the SSDI from Ancestry:

Who is listed in the SSDI?

This database is an index to basic information about persons with Social Security numbers whose deaths have been reported to the Social Security Administration. The death may have been reported by a survivor requesting benefits. It may have been reported in order to stop Social Security Benefits to the deceased. Funeral homes often report deaths to the SSA as a service to family members. Beginning in 1962, the SSA began to use a computer database for processing requests for benefits. About 98% percent of the people in the SSDI died after 1962, but a few death dates go back as far as 1937. Because legal Aliens in the U.S. can obtain a Social Security card, their names may appear in the SSDI if their deaths were reported. Some 400,000 railroad retirees are also included in the SSDI.

The Social Security Death Index is not an index to all deceased individuals who have held Social Security Numbers. It is not a database of all deceased individuals who have received Social Security Benefits, or whose families have received survivor benefits. (Porter 1999)

So it's likely he died before 1962, which is the point where the index really becomes useful. Will try to think how else we could find him :-k
Cheers!
Sarah
