Hi Marilyn,
I’ve been watching the weather and it looks like you got clobbered by snow and wind! Remember chasing garbage can lids all around the neighborhood in a snowstorm before we got those new “trash receptacles” with hinged lids? Not my favorite memory of winter!
I received the copy of Printers and Printing in Providence which my sister wanted me to buy because it mentions our grandfather James L. Clerihew as a journeyman printer. It turns out that the book is surprisingly readable. A lot of things written around the turn of the century were either horribly pedantic or just plain boring! This book contains quite a bit of the history of printing in the Providence area all from the view of the Typographical Union of course.
More importantly for us, it has 96 pages of short biographical sketches of the journeyman printers who belonged to this union in 1906. These men mostly came from the east coast states of the US and the eastern provinces of Canada, but they also ranged from as far away as California and South Africa. Scotland and England are heavily represented. Two thirds of them are at least second generation being born here, but the other third were new immigrants like my grandfather. The sketches include birth place, places where they had worked and in many cases, place and year of death.
Anyone who is looking for relatives might want to take a few minutes and scroll through the listings on the RIGen Rootsweb site. There are many, many familiar names in the list and even if you don’t think your relative was in the printing business, remember I didn’t know that my grandfather was either!

Nope we were lucky this time and spared the foot of snow that fell in Northern New England. The ski areas are open thats for sure.
Isn't it thrilling to own a book which mentions a relative? I own a few myself. Its been enjoyable to watch all of these exciting discoveries that you've been able to uncover along the way. Gosh, I can't wait until I'm retired.I received the copy of Printers and Printing in Providence which my sister wanted me to buy because it mentions our grandfather James L. This was an interesting link. E.L. Freeman is mentioned in many of the job descriptions and I couldn't figure out where I had heard that name before? It bugged me so, that I did a google and found some links to E.L. Freeman & Sons.
Back in the 80's I used to order office supplies from them, they're out of business now.

Hi Carol,
Over this past weekend I came across a file with your name on it. Tucked inside were a few pages from a Providence Street Directory listing the hospital on Parade Street. Can you remember if I ever sent these to you? Fairly sure I was having issues with my scanner back then? Let me know if you still need them.
Regards
Marilyn
P.S. I'll be away from the computer until much later today (mr. morning is having some stones removed today, no not from his head )

Marilyn,
Talk about timing! I went back through the previous posts to find what you had said about the Parade St. hospital and it turns out we were discussing that on Oct. 24 and 27th of last year!
You posted some information but didn't have your notes handy and someone named Val called you with some more information, but your call was interrupted--by your job!
I'd love to have what ever additional information you have on the hospital. It's in my file of "leads to follow someday" along with many others!
Tell your husband I wish him the best. Kidney stones are awful! My Dad had several episodes of them before the problem was finally taken care of.

Val is my sister she doesn't send me anything, its the other way around...Ah, but if I remember correctly I called her about the Nursing archives at Rhode Island hospital?
Speaking of Rhode Island hospital, I just spent the last ten or better hours there with mr. m. He's doing fine and I'm glad he's staying there tonight, because the pain medication is freaking him out a little and I'm too tired to deal with that right now.
I'm scan those documents to you on Tuesday night......

Hi Marilyn,
Remind me again how difficult it is to get a death certificate out of Rhode Island?!
I've been working on my Longmuirs again and Alexander in particular. I was checking the 1900 US Census and realized that he has a completely fictional birthdate of November, 1864 listed. I know that he was born in January, 1855. I haven't been able to pull a birth cert. on him, but he is listed as 9 months old on his mother's death cert. from Oct, 1855 and he is on the 1861 and 1871 Scotland census with the correct ages.
My sister suggested that it would be interesting to see his US death cert. to see what birthdate and age are given there. He was still alive in 1941 and listed in the Cranston directory. When I looked at the RI website it appears that you have to have the exact date of birth and a copy of a picture ID among other things.
Any shortcuts for this search that you know of?

Well not exactly a shortcut, but
If he passed before 1956, then his dc should be available at the Rhode Island Archives and available without all the rigamarole.
I'll check into it for ya, may take a few weeks before we get a reply back.
Regards

Thanks Marilyn,
One more question:
Alexander Longmuir married Eleanor Heron in 1893. I can't get their marriage listing to come up on Ancestry in the Rhode Island marriages-- probably another wacky mistranscription, but the New England Historic Genealogical Society says they have 1 listing for Alexander Longmuir if I would care to join for $75! I think I remember you saying that you are no longer a member, but do you know anyone who is and could look for that one listing?

Hi Carol
A search in the online vital records provided by NEGHS returns no results for an Alexander LONGMUIR. There are 10 LONGMUIR results in all years and all types of records. THese are for folk who either lived in Adams or North Adams Massachussetts which is tucked way up in the north western portion of the state. Can you tell me where you found the reference that NEGHS had one record for Alexander? Perhaps it's not a vital record. I'll be happy to look further for you.
Best wishes
Jean
