Greetings everyone,

I've been busy making a movie of the Eaglesham Heritage Trail opening event held on 2nd September 2011.

It's available on YouTube at:

http://www.youtube.com/user/EagleshamVillage

If you've got a good Broadband connection, try viewing the video clip at 720p.

Hope the video and speeches will be available on the new Eaglesham & Community Development Trust web-site when it's launched.

All the best,

Ken

Greetings everyone,

I've discovered from an article in the Glasgow Herald of a sale of work being held to raise funds for Eaglesham Children's Convalescent Home in 1895. This was news to me as I've never heard or read anything about a children's covalescent home in Eaglesham until now.

Does anyone know anything about this? It would have been situated in the village for the fresh air.

Best wishes,

Kenneth

Hello Kenneth,

Glasgow Herald, Friday, October 24, 1890.
They had the idea of a home in January and it opened in June, and they’re raising money to recover the cost of furniture and to purchase the house.

The Glasgow Herald, October 22, 1897. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2 ... 06,1971838
Established by Trinity Congregational Church, had been open for 7 years, and more than 1000 poor children of the City had benefited. Medically supervised by Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow. Funds needed to build or purchase a new building as present building at Eaglesham too small etc.

The Glasgow Herald, November 9, 1937. http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=HT ... nity&hl=en
House at Eaglesham accommodated 10 to 12 children, they moved to Ravenscraig in 1898.

Howzat,
Alan

Hello Alan,

Wow! Thanks very much for the information and links to the newspaper articles.

You've made a great contribution and so far away too. I didn't think anyone was going to be able to help with this... Just shows what a wealth of knowledge we have here at TalkingScot.

It's always interesting to learn something new and to be able to add to our knowledge.

The village was popular with Glasgow folks around the early 20th century who use to take houses for the summer and apparently was nicknamed 'little Switzerand'.

All the best,

Kenneth

It's often said that the 10th Earl of Eglinton (1723-1769) laid out the new planned village in the shape of a letter 'A' after his own name, i.e. Alexander.

However I was wondering if this would have been in honour of his wife rather than himself. Does anyone know the name of the 10th Earl's wife? I'm having difficulty finding this out.

Of course it is possible though that the layout was more a co-incidence of topography...

Could be wrong, but I always thought he was copying something he saw in Italy.

Hi Kenneth,

According to http://www.jamesboswell.info/biography/ ... l-eglinton he was engaged to be married at the time of his murder. His younger brother became the 11th Earl of Eglinton, supporting the theory that the 10th Earl had no offspring.

All the best,

I grew up just outside Eaglesham and my grand mother lived their during the war it is and has always been Eagle sum to the locals no sh, that is the English pronunciation. the earliest noting of it on a map is 'The Barony of Egg lis ham' the Ham is the suffix for a small town or hamlet, sham is not a word usually used in placenames, you do not talk of Birming sham.

Hi Andrew,

Many thanks for your info and link about the 10th Earl. No truth about the village being laid out in the letter 'A' in honour of his wife...

All the best,

Kenneth
