Hi Marilyn and Happy New Year!
That is good news about the birth cert. I also found that Alexander had a cousin John who immigrated and ended up in Trenton, NJ. There may be others around too. Alexander's father James was one of ten kids eight of whom lived to be adults and have children--as many as 9 or 10 each--so there are were a bunch of Longmuirs in Banffshire.
The name is also spelled Longmore which is what they used back home in Banffshire. They changed it to Longmuir when they moved to the city or elsewhere for some reason.

No I didn't ask Carol. If he passed before 1956, the cert will be at the archives. I'll have a look. But didn't I check for his death at the same time as Eleanor's? Can't rememberDid you ask about Alexander's death certificate too or does that come from a different place?

Hi Carol,You probably did check, but I can't remember either!
I was just scrolling through this thread (gosh we did a lot of yacking, I mean research on this family ) and we did in fact talk about Alexander's death. It appears I never followed up with the archives? Well no bother, I just called Ken and if its there, he'll find it. I'll keep you posted....
Meanwhile, if you can think of any other lookups on this family let me know before noontime today.
I tried to call Oakland Cemetery again just now and let the telephone ring about 50 times. The owner of Oakland should be ashamed of himself. How can you run a cemetery and not answer the phone or have an answering machine? Very weird......Eleanor Longmuir b. 5 June 1863 d. 20 December 1921 she was 58 yrs, 6months, 15 days. Place of Death: 6 Norwich Avenue, Usual Residence Same. Birthplace: Belfast, Ireland. Father, Hugh Heron - Mother, Jane (Gibson) Heron. Both parents were born in Ireland.
Also, I just finished reviewing Alexander Longmuir's entries in the city directories. It turns out that he was still alive in 1941 at the age of 86! He was living at 30 Case Ave., East Providence with his daughter and son-in-law. This came up under the Cranston, RI directory search.
I was just about to Mapquest Case Ave. I wonder if it is anywhere near your infamous Oakland Cemetery?
I'll pm you Oakland's phone number, if care to ring em up?
Regards
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,
No more look ups. They only had the one child as far as I know and I haven't even scratched the surface on her yet!
Maybe the staff at Oakland Cemetery is taking a long weekend vacation and figures that if anyone dies right now, they aren't going to be in a hurry to get buried!
Have been working on the Longmuir kids this morning. The eight of them produced 31 children of their own. Now I'm trying to track down their spouses and children to see if any more immigrated. It isn't easy with 5 Johns, 5 Williams, 5 Isabellas, 3 Margarets, and 3 Janets! The others were all singles. Should be a piece of cake!

Carol, I've tried numerous times to call Oakland last year and again today. Go back to page 6 or 7 on this thread to read my full comments. But, last year I called a funeral parlor and asked the director how he got in touch with Oakland. The director knows where the owner lives and drives over there to have him open a grave.Maybe the staff at Oakland Cemetery is taking a long weekend vacation and figures that if anyone dies right now, they aren't going to be in a hurry to get buried!

Hi Carol,
Bingo! Ken found Alexander's death cert this morning.
Alexander Longmuir was at home when he passed away at 2:30am on 15 Sept 1942, he was 83 yrs 9mths 23 days old.
His birth is listed as 23 November 1858, in Aberdeen, Scotland. He was living in the US for the past 60 years.
Oh, it states he's been retired as a Salesman from Callander on Westminster Street in Providence, Rhode Island
since 1927 and worked in this profession for 40 years.
It appears to me that Alexander moved in with his daughter shortly after Eleanor's passing. It
lists that he lived at his daughter's address for 20 years previous to his death in 1942. Eleanor passed away
on 20 Dec 1921.
Their daughter, Eleanor Agnes Longmuir was born on 5 Oct 1883, at home on 29 Candace Avenue, Providence
Rhode Island. Is that a new address for this family?
I'll be scanning these documents to ya later on tonight. Is your computer still acting up?
There's more, but it will need to wait until later tonight. (need to go make a phone call right now...lol )
This afternoon I stopped and bought a big box of Whitman's chocolates with a "Currier & Ives" cover and I
slapped a pretty blue bow on top. Ken was over at his desk when I walked in, so I walked over to wish him
a Happy New Year and thanked him for all his help through out the year. He smiled and turned a pretty shade
Regards

Hi Carol,
Here's the rest of what I found out
I doubled checked the marriage indexes for Alexander Longmuir & Eleanor Heron's marriage and there isn't one listed between 1853-1889. After 1889 the indexes are on micro-film and I didn't have the time to check those years.
The closest record I found, was
Ellen Heron marrying Joseph Fink on 28 Feb 1882 - book 82 page 638
The marriage records at the Rhode Island archives are cross-indexed. There is a Bride Index and a Groom Index. I checked both, just in case something was missed.
In the Bride Marriage Index 1853-1878, there were two female "Heron" married. One was named Catherine Heron and she married Michael O'Neil, on 30 Sept 1855 in Providence, Rhode Island. Their birthplace is listed as Ireland and no parents names are noted.
I can't read the other "Heron" female's last name on the marriage record. Ken slipped off to lunch while I was there and another clerk helped me and took the piece of paper that I had her named written down on. So I have the record and maybe you can figure out who she is? I'm not very good at reading bad hand-writing, poor eyesight. I'm totally unsure if ither of these two ladies are connected to Eleanor's family, but I picked them up just in case?
