Hi,
I notice that Evelyn was travelling with May Galt and Eveline P. (aged 3) when they travelled to the UK in 1896. This May (Mary on 1920 Census) in the wife of Clarence H. Galt who is the eldest brother of Evelyn (according to the 1870 Census). Clarence is at boarding school in the 1880 Census so not at home. On th 1870 Census John Galt has 15,000 valuation of property estate and 6000 personal estate and they have a gardener and a servant living with them in Newburgh, Orange New York. May (Mary) was born in Ireland (M.S McCutcheon).
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Fiona

Re: Evelyn G Miles
Hi Fiona
This is a confusing family - if you look at John & Co in 1880, Clarence is listed as being with them - listed as Clarance - but as you say, he is also at school. It does seem to solve the mystery of who was the 3 year old in 1897 & if my Evelyn is Evelyn Galt, she is probably from the family of 1880 - which leads me to - why didn't she return to them after her husband died? Did they disapprove of the marriage. And where did they marry?
Many thanks for this addition.
Trish

Re: Evelyn G Miles
Hi Nancy,
Are you talking about the 1908 arrival on the UK passenger lists? That one has her nationality being USA and is the New York to Liverpool voyage that Trish mentioned in her first post. Did you find another one coming from Canada? The UK Incoming Passenger List 1878-1960 is only ships arriving in the UK, not in Canada... so I'm confused as to what you saw.
All the best,
Sarah

Thanks Nancy - as Sarah noted that is the trip that I found - it was the first thing, other than the census that decided me to try and track her further.

I am Evelyn Galt great granddaghter & yes the family tree is a nightmare. Maryon, Evelyn & John Galt Jr. are the childern of John Galt second eldest son of SirAlexander .T Galt. John Galt married Mabel Patton. John Galt Sr. died in Victoria in 1933 & Mabel in 1944. Their childern: John Jr died in europe WW1 1915...I believe that was the travel back & forth & also Evelyn & Maryon married the same day in England Maryon to fellow named Crist who was something of a warrior & Evelyn to William Martin of winnipeg. Their brother John signed up with William Martin (my great grandfather). THe sisters husbands came back. The Galts often traveled with cousins.

I am thinking from your pen name - you are from Sydney in NSW - hope I have that right. It is quite a while since I was tracing Evelyn Galt - who I think married Frederick Miles - so I will have to check my records further. I think that the Evelyn who I am looking for is not the aunt of your g grandmother. I need to go back and check the children of Sir Alexander - do you have a list of them? I think we may have decided he had a daughter Evelyn who married in Canada & is thus not my Evelyn. All very confusing.
Thank you for the information - they all seem to be doing much travelling - I shall spend some time tracking back. Do you know of any other Evelyns in the extended family?
