I ended up with challenging the audience to find a certain family in the 1871 census in N Lanarkshire in one of a small number of parishes, in the context that they were to be found there in censuses before and after 1871, but couldn't be found in 1871 ...........
I ended up with the speculation that the enumerator, faced with having to walk up a mile and a half long lane late on the Sunday in bad weather in order to deliver the census schedule to the farm involved, didn't quite make it.
After my G&WSFHS lecture, a member of the audience with local knowledge commented that it was indeed the case that the farm in question was at the end of a mile and a half long lane
Would these be my Orr and Cruickshanks ancestors who inhabited Packstane Farm in Shotts (East District) from at least 1826 to 2000 (and possibly some distant relative still does). I can follow the family through 31 births, marriages or deaths across 7 generations and 6 of the 7 open censuses there for about 175 years. The exception being the 1871 census. That farm is up a long track from the main road, now on the edge of Harthill as it has expanded.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Hi Nina,
Given the English connection and the fact that James was a Hawker and probably travelled about, is it possible that the two children died in England?

Hi isobelc,
I didn't want to repeat myself...hehe...so have a look at the answer on this thread
viewtopic.php?p=25776#25776
Seems like more research outside Scotland might be in order.

Hi there,
I received a full refund for my credits used on searching for the family.
In my request for a refund I copied and pasted the searches from my"Viewed Images" folder, so they would know I wasn't telling porky pies.
Very happy about the outcome, and I hope that finding this error will help others when searching ED 15 (Calton, Glasgow) in the 1861.
Thanks to all here for your help!

That's great news Nina. When the 1861 Census became available I was left scratching my head as a few people I was looking for could not be found. They were all in Calton at the time. This may not be the reason for it but I'll keep an eye out just in case. I'll also keep my searches intact too.
