1871 Box Ticked but Changing to 1891 and Similar Problems

Post by DavidWW » Fri Mar 25, 2005 9:08 pm

Hi All

This is an InterNet Explorer cache problem.

The solution is to flush the cache. On INet Explorer v6.0 click on Tools, then InterNet Options, then General if that tab doesn't show up straightaway, then click on "Clear History". If that doesn't work, then, on the same page, click on "Delete Cookies", but be aware that this might complicatre access to other sites, but hopefully only temporarily.

The menu structure will be slightly different on other INet Explorer versions, and I have no idea what the detailed procedure will be on other web browsers but the same basic procedure is required.

Census

Hi Folks,
Looks like the long awaited 1871 census is the biggest disaster since the Titanic went down, its absolutely peppered with mistakes in the indexing, I was lokking for a Peter Connacher, and what image did I get, one for Charles Connacher. Another one I wanted was for a Mary Connacher, and up popped Mary wife of Hugh Connochan. It looks like they will have to remove the census to re-index it ](*,)

Looks like I was very fortuanate then. I got the Census images I was looking for, quickly, considering that the names were fairly common ones in the area.

Two of my Ggrandfather's sisters and their husbands were found once again on the same Census page, which always economises me 5 units. They move to a new street for each census but always end up living next door to each other.

I know the SP User Group members are taking note of the problems mentioned and we can hope that they will be ironed out before too long, before they reach Titannic proportions :!:

The Story so far

Post by mesklin » Sat Mar 26, 2005 12:43 am

After my first unsuccessful foray into 1871, where SP took the money but no credits appeared...
So why did it take my £6. Mail me a receipt. But NOT add the credits to my account

I had a few time expired credits. It activated them, so SP got the money. But not a single credit was credited!

Have sent an e-mail to SP, and unlike the last few emails sent, this time I will get a reply...
RESULT! No reply, but my 30 credits appeared - and an additional 15!. So credit where credit is due #-o . Thank you SP! Much appreciated.

but...

2 of the images I paid for, at 5 credits a time, were blanks. No page. Nada. Zip! Zilch.
So a contact form is on it's way, SP. And I did keep a copy.

Dave, should we download a copy of the blank page as proof?

Institution Details

Post by DavidWW » Sat Mar 26, 2005 9:46 am

For those who haven't used the on-line censuses before, - previous 1891 and 1901 census research may have been carried out on microfilm........

Occasionally you may come across an entry involving an institution such as a hospital, poorhouse, asylum, prison, etc., which isn't identified on the page you pay to view.

When you view the image, there is a button down on the bottom right "View Header Image". Clicking on this allows you to view for no additional cost the first few pages of the enumeration book where there is information on the nature of an institution if one is involved.

Invisible - Visible

Next chapter in the saga...

Following advice from our members, kept on clicking on the Paid button, and Lo! after several goes, the image appeared. So I got the image, but the mechanism is unacceptably flaky!

This only works if you have sufficient credit to pay for a view. If you have insufficient credit, and have merely paid for the image, it does not work. Have SP instituted some form of Vagrancy Law?

So far, I have obtained what I have paid for. But it has been a tiring, protracted process. And, so far, I have received exactly zero replies from SP.

Dave

ps When you buy credits (and you are sitting around thumb twiddling, waiting for something to happen) - is that the new SP Corporate Style at the top of the page? Is the garish brown and yellow fever style on the way out? :)

Thanks Davie for the inside info. I bought credits in advance (you get 7 days just now). Found some good data, some still missing, whats new?
Header Image is also a good piece of info which I hadnt made use of before.

Hi guys

Maybe I've just been lucky but I haven't had any problems with the 1871 census with the exception of the first day when I couldn't get SP to take my money. I just waited until the next day and I didn't have a problem. I spent all of yesterday afternoon searching and have found an abundance of family members that I didn't know I had. Well worth the wait in the end. Roll on the others - especially the 1841 census whenever it appears.

Thanks for the advice from all of you as it may well be that I will hit these problems at some point.

Cheers

Annette
