This post has proven very relevant to me....

My GGparents emigrated from Scotland to Australia in 1885. The husband was killed in a horse and cart accident shortly after arrival, and our Scottish heritage has always been sadly lacking.

There has been virtually no knowledge of his past, and as it turns out, their death certificates (our primary source of info) were quite inaccurate.
My GGmother's (Janet) Australian death certificate has her born in Stirling and her parents listed as William Adamson (builder) and Janet unknown.

I recently have been able to secure evidence to confirm that my GGGmothers maiden name was actually Margaret Boyd.
There is now enough additional evidence to confidently state, that the William Adamson (b.1819) in this post was my GGGfather.
The "Adamson Janet Aged 11 years, born Kilmarnock" was my GGmother.

Pandabean, it seems we are related, and I would like to get in touch.

Hi Snoyl,

I happened to come in here by chance and just saw your post.
I haven't looked much at that side of the family in a while so would have to get familiar with it again, if I remember rightly they come from over in Ayrshire...again this may be another line I am thinking of involving the Boyd's. If you want can you drop me a PM with the info you have (dates/occupations etc) and we will see what matches up and we can take it from there.

One additional thing we can check is passenger records if they exist for that time period. I am sure i had a link to some sites in my Whitcross/Whitson thread. I will have a look.
