OK
Seeings as you are really clutching at straws here, doing another search like the ones I pointed out previously with name JOHN mother MARY HUNTER, year 1872, BRITISH ISLES, SCOTLAND. There are two that come up with a birth date of 04 Oct. One of these is JOHN ADAMS, parents GEORGE ADAMS and MARY ANN HUNTER.
Maybe see if you can trace this family and if they are still around after 1877. Maybe Robert and Mary Ann ran away together taking her son with?

Hi Karen,
According to the IGI, this couple had:
Elizabeth Herwood Adams born 23 Apr 1868 Clyde, Glasgow
Christina Adams born 9 May 1869 Anderston, Glasgow
Samuel Hunter Adams born 21 Jun 1870 Anderston
Elizabeth Harwood Adams born 11 Aug 1871 Anderston
John Adams born 4 Oct 1872 Anderston
But the only child they seem to have with them in 1871 is named George and is too old to be Mary Ann's child.
1871
?? Elliot Street, Anderston, Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire
George Adams, 44, Head, born Ireland, Master Marine Hansmployger
Mary Ann Adams, 24, Wife, born Anderson, Aryshire
George Adams, 12, Son, born Anderson, Aryshire, Message Boy
And I don't see the family in 1881...
Regards,
Sarah

Thanks Karen. Very interesting. I can't find that family in 1881 or 1891 so far. Do you know what part of Scotland John was born in?

Hi Dollard,
did you see Sarahs post above? It's in Lanarkshire.
I did a free search on SP and there is 1 death for a GEORGE ADAM (no S on the end) b between 1820 and 1830 and died between 1872 and 1877. Am not any good with districts so did not narrow it down any further.
Did you also notice George's occupation on the 1871 cencus Sarah has posted. A Master Marine "something".

Ok folks....This one is looking good too isn't it???
This is what I've searched out so far....but have no idea if you could call it progress!!
George Adams was a widower when he wed Maryann Hunter in 1867. They stated a 20 year age difference but it might even have been a wee bit more as this appears to be Maryann on the 1861 census with her family in Ardrossan. She states her mum's name as Mary on her MC but it's quite certain to be Elizabeth given that she names two of her babies after her.
Name: Maryann Hunter
Age: 12
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1849

Father's Name: George
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Gender: Female
Where born: Ardrossan, Ayr

Elizabeth Hunter 40 b. Ireland
George Hunter 37 b. Ireland

Maryann Hunter 12 b. Ardrossan
Samuel Hunter 16 b. Ireland
George Adams had several children with his first wife Sarah Ann Tinsdale one of which is the George b 1859 you have found on the census with Maryann and George. The death of George's first wife is found in Anderston about 12 weeks prior to his marriage to Maryann. A decent period of mourning wouldn't you say??!! Why am I getting the feeling that this union wasn't for love???
Anyway...a quick look at the death indexes and the lineup of children born to Maryann and George are sadly found. A couple of premature births that only lived a few hours were the ones I peeked at. I haven't found George Adams' first family yet so perhaps there are some clues there when exactly he might have died. This is him with his first wife in 1861...

Now for the tricky bit. There is no death in Scotland for this Mary* Hunter Adam* . There is no sign of her on the 1881 census. THere is no sign of John Adams on the 1881 census or a death for him. There however is no good death for a George Adams either. There is a possible death from the marine records but this George was stated from Aberdeen with a last place of abode as Liverpool. He was 52 years of age and he drowned 17 Jan 1882 when the ship Bosphorus was wrecked. A look on the 1881 census in Liverpool does show a George Adams with a wife and family. He states on this he was born in Scotland. So basically I'm not convinced of either of these records belonging to the George Adams we've been tracing.
Time to get serious and try and find George Jr or Esther and see if they have anything to say about things............
Best wishes
Jean

Hello Dollard,
There are no Australian census records. All returns for the 19th and 20th centuries were destroyed immediately after the statistics were extracted. There are no centralised BM&D records. Each State is responsible for its own registrations. The Australian Colonies were federated in 1901. There were no “Australian” records at all prior to then. Everything was the responsibility of each Colony.
Some States have many records on line, others have very little.
In which Australian Colony or State were all these events happening? i.e. the arrival, BM&Ds and ongoing residence.
Alan

Karen that post wasn't there when I started typing my post but was there when I posted it. Never had that happen before. Maybe I'm too slow a typist.
I checked out that death of a George Adam. It was in 1874 in Glasgow. Age 48 engine smith. Lived at 21 Clyde St. Anderston. He was married to Helen Thompson.

Thanks Currie. I posted a query about census and immigration records for Victoria state earlier today on an Australian list and learned there are no census. Hard to believe. I'm glad my ancestors didn't go there. I've been given a number of links for OZ immigration records which will take me awhile to check out.

doing a free search on SP again there is 2 George ADAMS and 1 George ADAM dying in 1871. Was that a birth or Christening for the 04 of October?
Anyway, one of them could be the missing son.
