Here's the 1861 census link

David,

That's what I thought - seems too much of a coincidence not to be linked doesn't it.

Thanks,

Oh dear!!! I have just found Janet Ayre's MC (looked for it some months ago but it there was previously no image for some reason) and she gives her mother's name as Janet Miller :!: Her father is still given as George Ayre, carter - what is going on here? I'm sure I have the right family on the 1861 census, the same family Elizabeth is on in the 1851 census. I am completely stumped now as according to this Elizabeth Rarran is not Janet's mother, but could still be her brother and sister's mother, apart from Charles who seems to have yet another mother! If this is correct (and I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't) then George got about a bit, didn't he?!

Regards,
Cat

edit: Have just noticed Janet Miller is not given as deceased on the MC, like I would have expected. Her address is also given as Water Lane, Leith - the same address as given on the marriage of George Ayre to Ann McKay.

Hi,

An Ann Ayre or McKay died in Leith in 1860. If this is the person who married George Ayre in 1856, then that would make George a widower in 1861.

Thanks for that Isobel - I'll look into it :D. I'd better go and do some serious research now to try and figure this out - I must have gone wrong somewhere :( .

Cheers,
