Make sure you report your difficulty to your service provider as the more of us who do so will encourage them to fix it.

No further news on the SingTel website, but if you're still unhappy with the service that you're receiving locally from (SingTel) Optus in Oz, you might want to have a look at this part of the SingTel site .....

Hi David,

I would love to write to them...but we can't get onto the site! Maybe SP can contact them directly? Tell them that they are losing business because customers here in Australia can't log on?

I'd very much hope that it won't take that long, since re-routing, - but see previous emails on the complexity involved in setting that up, never mind costs, - will solve many, if not, most problems.

Since I had some detailed knowledge of the situation, - we're talking ca. 6 years ago, - looks like the spare capacity in parts at least of the worldwide fibreoptic network has been used up. It may also be a factor that the fibreoptic cable capacity is still there, but several major exchanges were mothballed, and would take months to bring back into use.

There may well also be a shortage of ships capable of cable-laying and cable repair, - ca. 6 years ago, Tyco, the company that then dominated the field, sold some, but decommissioned and scrapped most of its fleet. This was a factor in the downfall and court cases involving the Tyco International CEO Dennis Kozlowski :!: :!:

Hmmmm............... a rather neat Catch22 type situation !!

I'm sure that SP would be willing to make contact with SingTel Optus, but the sad reality is most probably that this part of the whole problem will be way, way down the list of priorities that Optus in Oz, and SingTel Optus overall are working on.

BTW, it does occur to me to wonder if the situation is simpler than we think in that the Taiwan cable breaks caused one or more SingTel DNS servers to go off-line, so that all that's required is to reboot these, but then maybe that's one out of several 100, even 1,000, tasks on the list for the SingTel technical support staff.

I'd be more than happy to submit a contact form on your behalf via the "Contact Us" section on the SingTel website. Such a contact form would be that more powerful, were it to be made on behalf of a number of Optus subscribers in Vic and SA ..........

I'll need details from you and others in terms of your Optus accounts .

Hello all,

sorry, but I should have mentioned that I sent a note to key SP people asking that they look sympathetically on users who could not gain access through no fault of their own. The User Group can not order SP to do anything, but SP are a decent bunch of people, so there are grounds to be optimistic.

As for proxy contact forms, I do not see the point. Any extension to access time should start when the user has regained access, and the easiest way for each user to show that reconnection has occurred is to send in a contact form!

John

Nina...got to say I've been following your unrelenting tale of woe with sympathy for your frustration. I can only point out the simple fact....At least you're able to log on to the helpful genealogy forums!!! Maybe your research has been temporarily stalled but you sure have a group of friends rooting for your side!!! \:D/ ......so hang in there!!!
Best wishes
Jean

I wasn't suggesting proxy contact forms to SP, but offering to send a proxy contact form to SingTel Optus [5 cups]

Hello David,

sorry about that. I had not been on the booze. I was in a hurry to get out, saw the words "Contact Us" and skimmed the rest. More haste, less speed, and a red face ultimately.

John

Nae prob :!:

I wasn't suggesting either that a proxy contact with SingTel Optus will end up really helping Ninatoo and others in Oz in the same situation, - just that it could certainly allow them to let of some steam, and, wha' kens, appropriately phrased, might just lead to some attention from SingTel Optus management, and, further down the line, Optus in Oz when referred to them by the Singapore HQ; especially if a wee bit of pressure could be applied to Optus OZ via an appropriate press release on the subject to Vic and SA media................
