I have to agree with David. My response from Optus:

"Thank you for your e-mail.

OptusNet DSL is a residential service and is provided on a best basic effort. Due to the nature of the ADSL network the service can not be guaranteed to be up and operational 100% of the time.

OptusNet DSL tries to ensure that stability of its services it provides but as stated can not guaranteed the services to be operational 100% of the time.

If you have any further questions regarding this issue please call our customer service centre on 1300 309 333. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Regards, Scot"

No explanation as to what the problem is or when it might be rectified.

I love the phrase in the email to Alastair, - "best basic effort" - Whit ra' heck dis that mean?, apart from "we'll happily take your money, but can't give you any guarantee that you'll get anything in return"

...and, presumably, no refunds will be offered for periods of lack of service [5 cups]

Hi alastair and welcome to talkingscot!

Optus are pretty good at avoiding telling anyone what the problem is, particularly when they don't have total control over whne and how it can be fixed.

David, yes I agree we subscribers are just the little fish, but I would like to see what would happen if every single one of us withdrew our subscription from them. It would be fun watching them scramble.

Sigh...pipe dream....my imagination runs riot when it is not occupied with census returns and family lines....

Hi Nina,

Maybe the other thing you have now worked out is that TalkingScot is not hosted in Scotland - otherwise we may have disappeared from your view of the internet.

I hope it doesn't shatter anyone's illusions of a website based in one of Scotland's cities or in a remote heather-clad highland glen. TalkingScot is based in the web-servers of a hosting company in Texas. Hence by the internet routes currently available to you, TalkingScot is still here, live and kicking.

All the best,

Thanks for that Andrew.

No, I nor anyone else can actually blame Scotland for this problem. It was just unfortunate that the cables which are affected run to Scotland...they could have run to Italy...just the luck of the draw...and even then it isn't every site that is down.

dstew...you are lucky. My parents both have Optus as well :(

OK, fair do, they're not responsible for the sub-sea quake off Taiwan that broke many of the fibreoptic cables, but they, like many other affected companies, managed to re-route large percentages of their trafiic.

Anyway, folks, your problems, apparantly, are over. This is the latest piece of news on the SingTel Optus site .........

QUOTE
Internet and voice traffic back to normal

Singapore, 3 January 2007 - SingTel has already restored Internet service for both consumer and corporate customers. Internet and voice traffic are back to normal. All consumer and small business services have also been normalised.

ENDQUOTE

Note the date :!:

Is everyone normalised :?: [sigh]
