William McLaren

Post by nelmit » Fri Aug 31, 2007 7:34 pm

Hello all,

While at Park Circus yesterday I was trying to pinpoint a certain William McLaren.

What I know -

John Mclaren born 1850 to William McLaren and Janet Shirra.
Janet died in 1855 leaving William, an Iron Turner, with 3 children, John -5, Elizabeth -3 and Isabella -6 months.

1851 Census 171 Dobbies Loan-

William McLaren -Engineer -26 Downie, Perth
Janet McLaren - 20 - Downie, Perth
John McLaren -9m - Glasgow

I found a William McLaren in 1881 who I thought fitted the bill (apart from the birthplace)-

Dwelling: 19 Preston St
Census Place: Govan, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203673 GRO Ref Volume 644-11 EnumDist 106 Page 4
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
William MC LARAN M 55 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Iron Turner
Margaret MC LARAN M 53 F Wick, Caithness, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Occ: Wife
William MC LARAN U 22 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Forger

So at Park Circus I viewed his marriage to Margaret in 1879- his parents were John McLaren and Isabella King.

Found another marriage in 1856 to Isabella Kirkland where he was a widower. Great that's William's mum.

1861 114 Rose Street-
William McLaren - 35 - Iron Turner - Barony
Isabella McLaren
Elizabeth - 8
William - 2
James - 6months.

Now I'm going through my notes and have just realised there is no John age 10 in that household!!!!!!! Kicking myself because I was so intent on tracing William that I forgot all about John.
John was married and living at 80 Rose Street in 1871.

If you are still with me - I am sure this has got to be John's dad but where was John in 1861?

regards,
Annette M

Could he have been with a relative, since she had 3 other children and two being so young? I have a Helen Kelly (6) with her grandparents next door in the 1891 census when her mother had two smaller and 3 older children.

Hello Annette,

Just in case you don’t already have this one. There’s an Ann Kirkland McLaren extracted birth record on the IGI, born 12 JUL 1857 at High Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Parents William McLaren & Isabella Kirkland.

Hi Jean,

I would have thought young John would have been living in the Gorbals in 1861 but then again if he was living with a relative he could be anywhere.
Don't worry too much about John - I was just mad when I realised there was no John with this William when I got home.

That's my whole problem with John's father William.

There seems to be so many around the same age. I've tried to find this particular William's death to see if Janet Shirra appears as his first wife but am not having much luck. Theoretically, John's father William should have died in the Gorbals/Hutchestown area but so far I haven't found one in that area of the correct age and if I start to widen the age parameters.......................................

Thanks for trying Jean,
Best wishes,
Annette M

Hi Alan,

If this proves to be John's father, then he didn't hang about ........married and another child born within 2 years of his first wife's death.

The Elizabeth on the 1861 census makes me think that he is the right man but till I have proof ......................... :?

Another visit to Park Circus is in order I think but we are in to the end of October now for a booking and I suppose I better get back to work to earn some money to pay for it all . :D

Hi Frances,

I'm hoping that was the case as there is no John with this William in 1861.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Back again Annette,

I’ve just been fiddling around with a search on SP looking for clues. There’s a death of a Janet Shirra McLaren born 1871 died in Lanark in 1873. There’s also a death of a male *Shirra McLaren also born 1871 died in Lanark in 1871.

According to the IGI Janet is John’s daughter so chances are you have all this. I’ll post it anyway just in case they slipped through the net.

Hope this helps.
Alan
