Hello Lesley,
Welcome to Talking Scot!
I assume this is the family in New Shoreham, Sussex in 1841?
1841
Thos Sinclair, 44, mariner, born outside county
Amelia Sinclair, 44, born in Sussex
Amelia Sinclair, 10, born in Sussex
Thomas Sinclair, 8, born in Sussex
He doesn't say he was born in Scotland... but it wouldn't be the first time the census had things wrong!
All the best,
Sarah

Hello Lesley,
Do you know when and where Thomas Snr and Amelia died? If you have their death certificates was there anything thereon regarding parents or date and place of birth? Am I right in assuming that they didn’t come to Australia? If not, do you have any info about their wherabouts subsequent to 1841?
If they stayed in England and died there, on FreeBMD I found three Amelia Sinclair’s, not ruled out by age, who died after 1841. The only one who shared a Registration District with a Thomas Sinclair death was
Deaths Sep 1852
Sinclair Amelia East London 1c 19
Deaths Jun 1859
SINCLAIR Thomas E. London 1c 22
It’s just guesswork really. It all depends on where they were in 1851 and whether they had disappeared by 1861.
From personal experience, the trouble with Master Mariners is that they won’t stay put and they tend to sail off the end of the World and disappear.
By the way, was the son the Captain Henry Daniel Sinclair of Bowen fame?
