Trying to get information about the death John Martin (Shipmaster) who died in West Indies June/July 1844. Unfortunately do not know the vessel, although he was master of the TAURUS (out of Aberdeen) until Feb.1844.
Any ideas as to how to proceed ?

A warm Welcome to TalkingScot on a chilly day.

Not much of an expert in this area but there are a few around & one in particular who I am sure will beable to direct you in the right direction.

We love queries & questions & often have to ask some of our own from time to time so don't be shy about asking.

Just had a thought have you had a look at the Wills section on Scotlandspeople? Although he may have died in the West Indies the chances are that his Will was proved in Scotland & it's free to search so worth a look.

Many thanks for your prompt reply.
Yes, I checked the Wills. He did not leave a Will.
The information about his death date was from a gravestone in Peterhead Old Cemetery.

My great grandmother's brother was also a Ship's Master I am interested to know if there would be any Guild records on Ship Master? Is there anyway I could find out which ship he sailed on?

Nothing for Alex, but for Andrew,

Until you get a better reply it might be worthwhile searching the London Times as it contains a lot of information about shipping movements. Your success would depend on how common his name is, the period involved, the type of ship he was Master of and the routes he was travelling.

If you don’t have access to the Times Digital Archive go to this site, join the Library, and follow your nose. Just search for Captain Smith or Captain John Smith (hopefully not) and you might be lucky.

You might be able to find some useful info on one of the sites listed in the Seafaring ‘sticky’.
