1851 census look up please
Can anyone find William Clark Shaw born c1817 in the 1851 census. He should have three daughters living with him. Mary Clark Shaw born 1846, Christina Primrose Shaw born 1844 and Elizabeth Primrose Shaw born 1848. Their mother Elizabeth may also be there.
I have found the father and three children in the 1861 census.
I would also like to find Christina and Elizabeth, the two daughters in the 1871 census. Mary was married by 1866 and William, I think, died in 1865??
Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Hi Betty
Can't see them in 1851 but is your William at Eglinton Street in the Gorbals in 1841 with parents James and Mary and various siblings. I ask because the occupation seems likely.
Is Elizabeth there in Centre Street with her parents William and Christina or am I barking up the wrong tree (as opposed to just plain barking).
I don't see a death for a William Shaw in 1865. Am I missing something?

At the moment I am afraid I do not know William's parents names. Can you tell me what the occupation is?
The Elizabeth you refer to in Centre Street is that the Elizabeth who married William Clark Shaw. Again I don't know her parents names.
It might be me who is barking up the wrong tree. I found in Scotlands People a William Shaw having died in 1865. This was purely done by bringing the dates down. I have not paid as yet for the certificate. He was alive in 1861 and deceased by 1866 when his daughter Mary Clark Shaw was married.
Thanks for your help.

Here is the Elizabeth and family that Anne was referring to in 1841.
I don't think there is much doubt that this is your Elizabeth.

I searched Scotlands People http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ but I'm afraid I do not have enough credits to look at the image.Betty MacKenzie wrote:Hi Annettenelmit wrote:Haven't a clue if it's her or not but I searched for Mary Clark Shaw age 5 in 1851 and got 1 hit at Lanarkshire.
Might be worth a look.

Can you give me any details of what is on the census. I am afraid I do not have access to the 1851 census.
Thanks
Betty

Hi Betty
Annette has spotted the right family for you in 1851. All you have to do is go on Scotland's People to see them. Heaven alone knows what they are indexed as on Ancestry! I'm more than ever convinced that I have the right William in 1841 as he is a jeweller. You are lucky to have a sister with him there as well which is a bonus.
I think that mother Elizabeth is dead by 1851 as it looks as though he is a widower. It's surprising that he did not marry again unless of course Elizabeth's family were well off and helping him along.
Anne
Excellent. Ancestry has them indexed as Shuer. I think I can be excused for not finding them!
