Census "Double Entries" - for Marilyn

Post by Jack » Sat Oct 20, 2007 1:20 am

Hi again Marilyn,

I've come across "Double Entries" quite a few times, and sometimes it was with a number of families in a street.
So not just a single name or family.
(with a single name it was often just wee Mary or John round the corner at granny's hoose)

But occasionally a part of a street was recorded by two different enumerators, and these had differing GROS Nos.
The outcome being that, for some families, the enumerators recorded them with different details...!

I've a note of a few "double entries" somewhere; but as usual, where have i put them....

Cheers - Jack (watching his back  )

ps, i think it's been mentioned on TS a couple of times?
I know we've come across some in trying to solve problems.

Hi Jack,

Of course you've come across double entries before, because you're sharp as a tack when it comes to census entries.

I'm sure its been discussed here on TS before now, but I must of missed them. OK I will admit that some of the posts do pass by me. :D

Regards
Marilyn

Here you are Marilyn,
Three examples from the London Rd, Glasgow in 1881 on what happened with "Double Entries".
Makes you wonder.... :-k :?

Apart from different name spellings, the first has completely missed out niece Ellen aged 3yrs...
The first one usefully gave the whereabouts in Ireland.

Mother Elspeth PRATT is missing from the first, and 12yr old daur Margaret is as Head....
(Ancestry made it more confusing on both of these...
they've got the Pratts & Wilsons as as members of the previous household...

The surname of William differs quite a bit, and likewise his occupation....
But it's a transcription, and capital letters "L" and "S" can look very similar.
Seems the surname is actually SEAGARS (from IGI).

1881 Census 644-2 EnumDist 51 Page 15 (Barony - Camlachie)
301 London Rd

The above 1881 census 644-2 Ed 51 pages 1 - 23, are also as 644-2 Ed 51 pages 24 - 47.
Thankfully they didn't all have differences like the three more extreme examples above.
Cheers - Jack

It highlights the trouble we have with searching even using wildcards. Credits don't take long to disappear
