1861 look up PLEASE!

Post by caljam371 » Sun Oct 21, 2007 9:34 pm

I'm trying to find my GGreat Grnadmother in 1861.

Here she is in 1851:
Name: Janet Matheson Age: 8 Estimated birth year: abt 1843 Relationship: Daughter Father's name: James Mother's name: Barbara Gender: Female Where born: St Andrews, Fifeshire Parish Number: 84 Civil parish: Urquhart and Logie Wester County: Ross and Cromarty Address: Loch Sheriff's Side Occupation: Scholar ED: 1 Page: </cgi-bin/sse.dll?viewrecord=1&ti=5538&r=5538&db=1851Scotland&F0=CSSCT1851_18-0184&F7=5> (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 16 Line: 3 Roll: CSSCT1851_18

Household Members:
Name Age
Anne Matheson 5 Daughter - Scholar - St Andrews
Barbara Matheson 28 Wife - Crofter's Wife - St Andrews
Barbara Matheson 1 Daughter - At Home - Babracanach
James Matheson 38 Head - General Labourer & Crofter of 4 Acres - Urquhart Babracanach, Rosshire
Janet Matheson 8 Daughter - Scholar - St Andrews

I know there were other children of James and Barbara:
Geaorge b.1852
Esther b. 1855
Henry b. 1859

They also seemed to flit between Ross & Cromarty and Fife.

I want to find a Margaret so that I can let my aunt know who she was named after - seemingly Margaret Matheson was from Tain and married a one armed milkman.

Hi caljam371
Not sure where you have looked already. The results you have given look like they may be from Ancestry. Have you tried ScotlandsPeople? If so, were there any results?
Matheson is one of those names where a use of wildcards may help as it could be spelt a number of ways e.g. Matheson, Mathison, Mathieson or it could turn up as Matthewson or even Mattieson  , so a search for Mat*son may work best on a site such as SP. The following looks like a possible:
1861 MATHERSON JANET F 18 ST ANDREWS AND ST LEONARDS /FIFE 453/00 011/00 001

Best wishes
Lesley

Mathieson - Fife 1861

Seems the family are back in Fife 1861.
Lesley's find looks good for your GG-GM Janet.

For the rest of the family do a search for Barbary MATHIESON, age 38.

Unsurprisingly there is only one Barbary...!

ps; the family are still in Fife 1871; this time search for... Babara MATHESON, age 48.
Again only one Babara...
Can't see any mention of a daur Margaret with the family in 1861, 1871, or 1881 though... :?

Thanks all!

Margaret was maybe a cousin or something - She'll no doubt appear sometime.

:)
