According to the 1851 Census, my GGG/F lived in Main Street, in Barony. The tif from Scotland People has the code no. 1851 622/00 079/00 013 superimposed over the record image.
I'm keen to find out where this address may be/ have been, and the code seems to give some hints: e.g. 622 is Barony Parish, and 013 is the page number of the record. But the numbers in between mean nothing to me, and I can't locate any clues as to their interpretation. There seem to have been several Main Streets in what was then Barony - Calton, Maryhill, Tollcross & Shettleston all come up in GENUKI's list of renamed Glasgow streets.
Can anyone either explain how these codes work, or suggest which Main Street this is likely to be?
Thanks in advance
Jim

Hi Jim,
Welcome to TalkingScot.
You are right in the decoding you have done. 622 represents Barony Parish - an area partly surrounding Glasgow City Parish, mostly to the north and east of the City Parish. And page 13 is the page number.
79 represents Enumeration Book 79 in Barony Parish. These enumeration book numbers were applied some time after 1851. I suspect, but cannot prove that numbering system was applied when the censuses were first microfilmed (in the 1950s?). Having studied the censuses, I can tell you that book 79 in Barony was originally numbered book 36 in the Anderston district of Barony Parish.
To find out what streets, or parts of streets, that book applied to you need to see the front pages of that book - those before the pages normally looked at. On ScotlandsPeople, once you have looked at a page from that book you can view the header page(s) for no further charge. Look for the View Free Header button on that webpage. Click on that to view these pages. You may need to step forward a page or two to find the description of the area enumerated in that book.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Andrew-
Many thanks for your speedy response, and enlightening info on the Enumeration Books. Anderston makes sense as my GGGP's were married there in 1842.
Thanks also for the tip on the Header page(s). I'd clicked the View Free Header link, but didn't notice that I could step forward through a set of pages in there. So I just saw the front cover, which was not very informative! I'll go back in there and look for the rest now...
