Help reading 1861 census Isabella Chalmers birthplace

Post by speleobat2 » Sat Nov 10, 2007 12:22 am

I just posted a portion of the 1861 Census with an entry for Isabella Chalmers about the fourth line down. The birthplace looks like Montrose, something. Can anyone read what the next word is. The only Montrose I know of is in Angus but this doesn't look like Angus.

Hi Carol,

The only thing I can guess at is Montrose Crage. Could it be the parish of Craig, which is immediately south of Montrose?

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks for the URL on this one too Andrew!

Montrose, Crage was what I read, but I was really hoping that someone would come up with something up around Newhills. Isabella was Sophia Chalmers' (my 2x great grandmother) older sister. If the family is from Montrose, that means I need to add a couple hundred more Chalmers and Barclays to my database and start searching in Angus too! :o

Hi Carol

I hate to say it but I agree with Andrew on this one. Crage
I wondered if the enumerator had used the older form of 'S' but not on this census page he hasn't :(
Maybe one of Andy's excel spreadsheets is going to be needed.

Small problem, Russell. I have the home version of Vista, doesn't include Excel. But I can upgrade for just another $150. !

Genealogy has a way of snowballing like that :D I'm sure we can all sympathize! Face it, the tree is just going to keep spreading
On the up-side, maybe you'll have some new questions to research, thereby keeping us TS members happy and occupied
Have fun!

Hello everyone!

Today was our annual Fall Clean Out the Garage Day. My husband and I walk around in the garage saying, "No! Don't throw THAT out!" until we have all the junk rearranged and a little more space so I'm just now getting to my email.

Thanks to everyone for your input on both of the certificates that I posted last evening. I'm not familiar enough with the parishes to recognize that that was what Crage was when I saw it. I thought it must be an error or there was another Montrose someplace in Scotland. I won't mention what the census transcription did to this one! I'm not sure when I'm going to get back to the Chalmers/Barclay bunch. I was double checking some of my lists when I found those certificates again and still couldn't read them. You'll probably still be hearing from me next year!

Hi Maureen,

That's for the try! Unfortunately, I don't think it's the same Isabella Chalmers. I found yours on the 1841 Census living at the same address, but it says she was born in Aberdeenshire. I couldn't find her on the 1861 Census but I haven't tried any wildcards yet. I need another cup of coffee first!

Whew! I was trying to get a handle on these Isabellas and it took me some devious searching to find this entry on Ancestry! In case you haven't seen the "transcription"...

1861
126 Gallowgate, Aberdeen Greyfriars, Aberdeenshire
Sophia Clercherd, 61, Head, born New Hill, Aberdeenshire
Ann Clercherd, 31, Daughter, born Inverness, Aberdeenshire, Mill Worker Flax
George Clercherd, 23, Son, born Onne, Aberdeenshire, Mill Wright
Isabella Cholmar, 70, Lodger, born Mentmore, Brage, House Keeper

Wow! What a mess! Enough to send anyone on a series of wild goose chases...
Is that a new version of Clerihew for you, Carol? :D

All the best,
Sarah
