1901 census for Webster

Post by yazza » Sun Nov 18, 2007 3:18 pm

hi
I have been looking for Robert and Isabella Webster on the 1901 Scotland census but can't find them.In 1891 they were in England where Robert worked at the Tyneside shipyards as a blacksmith.I know they returned to Scotland because they died at Dumbarton in 1935 and 1940 respectively.I can't find them on the 1901 English census either.Maybe Robert returned to work on the Clyde shipyards and they later retired to Dumbarton?I think the name could be mistranscribed but whether in England or Scotland i don't know.Robert was born in 1859 at St Andrews.I did find a couple of Robert Websters but none with a wife called Isabella. Can anyone help to find them.
regards
Steve

Hi April Flower
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D

The family you have found certainly look like very strong contenders - and interesting to see they seem to have east coast connections.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello April Flower,
Welcome to Talking Scot! [talkingscot]
Thank you for using your first post to help someone out :D The census you found is the 1891 (I know because I looked for them also  ) If I understand correctly, I think Yazza is looking for the family in 1901 and they are nowhere to be found...
I judge by the lack of posts on this topic that no one else has found them either :( Maybe the family was moving house just on census night!?
Again, thanks for joining us :D We look forward to hearing about your brick walls!
All the best,
Sarah

Hello Steve,

You can get a second opinion on the 1901 England/Wales census to compare to that on Ancestry? and possibly eliminate the England option. You can get this from 1901 Census Online, that’s Genes Reunited, but was the one they purchased and is far superior in search and search results compared to their own efforts on earlier census. In transcription quality it’s superior to Ancestry. Searching is free and you can search by occupation, parish, place of birth etc.

http://www.1901census.nationalarchives. ... ith_locale

If you search for Robert (and Rob and Robt etc) Webster born Scotland 1859 +/-5 you’ll get only a few results. You can then search for Isabella (and variations) born Scotland on whatever date and compare the two results for matching Parishes or Counties. Compare this to the Ancestry? results to eliminate or confirm any transcription doubts.

At least you then have more grounds for removing the England possibility, but as Sarah said, they mightn’t be anywhere.

Hope this helps,
Alan

hi AF
Yes that is them in 1891 but no sign of them in 1901.I have the 1901 census on cd and have trawled through the same area and streets but some names look unreadable so maybe they have not been transcribed?Sarah you might be correct unless they emigrated then returned to Scotland.Alan i did not know you could do that so will try what you said, thanks to all for your help.

Steve
