Apprenticeship records--Aberdeen Journal ?

Post by speleobat2 » Wed Nov 21, 2007 12:04 am

Someone on the Press and Journal discussion board suggested that I might find my grandfather's apprenticeship records from The Aberdeen Journal 1895-1899 at the National Library of Scotland.

Does anyone know if these records are available online?

Hi Carol,

I had a look through NLS and managed to find the following website:

Link to NLS Record

This film seems to contain the dates that you require. It might be worth contacting the NLS and asking if they do a copy service.

I havent ordered anything from NLS before but hopefully someone with some experience of using it can help out.

Also to mention I am in Aberdeen itself and I could easily search through the microfilms at the library however at the moment I am struggling for free time. If you have no luck with NLS then let me know and I can have a little look, but I can't gaurantee when.

Just thinking of that it might be worth contacting the Aberdeen City Library themselves. They are very helpful and I know that they do research for people.

Details for the Library:
Aberdeen Central Library

Good Luck. :)

Thanks Andy,

I had a feeling that this was going to take a written request when I asked about it, but there was always the chance that someone would say, "Oh sure, those are online at..."

The person at the other website suggested that the Central Library would be the best place to start. Now I just have to get that email written! Will keep you posted. :D

Hi Andy,

Hang on to your free time! I know how little of that there is for all of us.

Here's a little luck: I just received my latest Journal from the ANESFHS and in the Chairman's Report it says that they have just ordered a new film cabinet. As soon as it's in the Aberdeen Journal 1747-1900 and the Banffshire Journal 1845-1900 newspapers on microfilm will be available to be searched!!! :D I'm a member so I can email and ask them about the Photo Art Club. In fact, if I hadn't been so dense, I would have thought of that a while back! Hope to have the email to the Central Library about the apprenticeship records out by the end of this week.

Everything comes to she who waits! :D

Got home today and there was an email from the Local Studies Department at the Aberdeen City Library. Someone has taken up the search for The Photo Art Club.

Turns out that it was a member society of the Scottish Photographic Federation which was organized in 1903 and is very much alive and functioning today. The Local Studies Dept. is continuing to search and has recommended that I contact the Federation to see if they can find my grandfather in their old catalogues! :D

I'm off to write that email!

Amongst my many books there is an HMSO publication which states that Burgh records were published by the Burgh Record Society between the years 1869-1917. Such records which include indentures of apprenticeship amongst other things are available for Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Lanark, Paisley, Peebles and Stirling.
This information is held by the Scottish Record Office.
Hoping this helps. I wouldn’t mind taking a look myself.

ps: I have just noticed the date of the latest post. It's like i'm in an inverse time warp. Oh well!

Hi Malcolm,

Anyone doing genealogy is in an inverse time warp! You have lots of company. :D :D :D :D :D :D

I never got anywhere with trying to find my grandfather's apprenticeship records so your book sounds interesting, but I've never heard of it either.

Maybe someone else has something on this?

Hello speleobat
My book is just a reference point. It simply informs the reader as to what information is available and where it can be seen.
As far as I am aware the Burgh records are not available on-line but perhaps someone else reading this will know better. In any event I think they represent the best opportunity to study the sort of records you are interested in.
