Hello,
I need to know where to find the ship's journey story book like the diary book to see why my ggg grandfather's brother who was seaman who was lost at Southern Ocean 1858 did he fell off the ship or got sick and died on the ship? such like that? His captain R.Alexander with his ship Himalaya came back to British water in 1859 to register his death in 1859, I wonder if he died from sickness or got in bad weather storm?? Fell off the ship?? The Ship;s home port was in Montrose, Scotland, the ship was sailing from Liverpool to India and Shi Maurits.
How to find out the answers?
thank you Margaret

Hello Margaret,
It would be the Ship’s Log you are looking for.
This page gives information about the keeping of Ship’s Logs and the survival of some in the National Archives.
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... ID=130&j=1
More information is on pages 166 to 168 of Dana's Seaman's friend 1856 (an excellent little Google book). http://books.google.com/books?id=8VwBAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA166
Have a look at this page under “Deaths at Sea” as he would probably have had wages or some possessions when he died. Any records like that might mention the circumstances of his death. http://www.searcher-na.co.uk/merchant_navy_records.htm
Was Edward Brannan’s 1859 death registration in Scotland or was it elsewhere in the U.K. Do you have a copy of the death certificate. I would imagine that someone registering a death would have to give some sort of a statement as to its cause.
Hope this helps,
Alan
