I have a Robert Wharrie born about 1842 in Ayrshire who married Mary Ann Hunter who was born about 1840 in Ayrshire. They married 1868 July 26 in Ayrshire or Glasgow. They had a son John born 1872 (1873?) Oct 4 in Glasgow. The family emigrated to Australia about 1876. I can't find this family in any records. I have checked Scotlandspeople for the 1868 marriage and 1872 birth. I can't find Robert Wharrie on the 1851, 1861, or 1871 census at Scotlandspeople or Ancestry. Mystery. It isn't a very common name so they should be easy to find. The name may have been McWharrie originally. Does anyone have any suggestions?
John

Hello Dollard,
You didn't mention where you got your marriage date or the birth date from. That could be a help. I had a look on SCotlands People and just looking for a marriage of a Mary Ann Hunter to a Robert ( thus skipping the problem of Wharrie/Wharrey/ Weirie etc) And I could find none anywhere. However if you broaden your search dates from say 1866- 1874 you will find 3.
Could you please post again letting us know the source of your data?

Robert Wharrie had a daughter in 1877 in Australia. On the daughter's birth certificate it gives Robert's age and his marriage date and place. Robert's death certificate in OZ gives his age also. Also says he was shipwright (for what it is worth). I did broaden my marriage search on Scotlandspeople and none of those 3 marriages was the right one.

Hi John
When you mentioned he was a shipwright my first thought was possibly Ardrossan & Saltcoats where there was an active ship building trade.
Its such an unusual surname that a local township website might be worth a try.
The website is http://www.threetowners.com/.
They have a message board and perhaps someone else is looking for the same family.
Worth a try

Hello John,
Your Wharrie's, i think Robert Wharrie's, parents were Robert Wharrie, and a Margaret.
1841 census Dundonald, Ayr.
Address Fullerton Street,
Robert Wharrie, M. age 30 years, Cotton hand Loomer, born Ayrshire,
Margaret Wharrie, F. age 30 years, born Ayrshire,
Agnes Wharrie, F. age 6 years, born Ayrshire,
Robert Wharrie, M. age 5 years, born Ayrshire.
1851, census index Dundonald, Ayr.
Robert Wharrie ?. age 40 years,
Agnes Wharrie ?. age 44 years,
Robert Wharrie ?. age 14 years.
I think Robert, senior's wife Margaret, died sometime between 1841, census and 1850, as there is a Marriage for a Robert Wharrie, and a Agnes Cameron, on the 10/Sep/1850. Dundonald, Ayr.
By the time of the 1861 census, Robert, senior and his wife Agnes, are living in Irvine, Ayr, but their is no sign of Robert Wharrie, junior in Ayrshire.
Regards,
Jonn.

Hello John,
Further to my last post Robert Wharrie, married Margaret Clark, on 19/Jul/1833, Dundonald, Ayr.
Agnes Wharrie, was born 29/June/1834, Dundonald, Ayr, to Robert, and Margaret Clark.
Agnes, age matches with the young Agnes, aged 6 years, on the 1841, census above.
It looks like young Robert's, birth may not have been registered, or its one of the many births missing pre 1855.
Regards,
Jonn.

Hello John,
On the name Wharrie, there are these numbers in Scotland,
1841, census 41,
1851, census 56,
1861, census, 62,
In 1851, there are 22 Wharrie's, living in Ayrshire,
in 1861, there are 21 Wharrie's, living in Ayrshire.
As you stated there are not many in the whole of Scotland, and its a good chance that the ones in Ayrshire, are related.
I would also say it would be a ideal name for a one name study.
Regards,
Jonn.

Thanks deano. I have checked out that family on the census also but I don't know if they are mine. Maybe. If only they had identifying labels.
Unrelated to what you posted there is the baptism of a Robert McWharrie 1835/01/01 at Ayr, Ayrshire son of Allan and Elizabeth Guthrie. I haven't found this family on census yet.
