Census Look-up Requests – 1881 and 1891

Post by q98 » Sun Dec 16, 2007 12:17 am

On 3rd June 1892, David Black and Mary McDougall were married at Irvine. David was aged 22 years and Mary 19 years. Both were listed as “farm servant” and their addresses as “Girthill Farm, Ardrossan”.
David’s parents were “Robert Black, seaman, deceased” and “Ann Black (m.s. Hume), deceased” while Mary’s parents were “John McDougall, Coal Miner” and “Margaret McDougall (m.s. Hunter)”.

I should appreciate any information relating to their immediate families; siblings, ages, etc.

Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year to all TS subscribers.

Hello Jim.

Following on from Nelmit's, post David Black's, parents were married 23/July/1853, Ardrossan, Ayr.

there are four births to this couple on the IGI.

Margaret Barr Black, born 23/Aug/1858, Ardrossan,
George Black, born 19/Nov/1860, Stevenston,
David Black, born 29/Oct/1865, Stevenson,
Neil Black, born 12/Feb/1863, Stevenston,

On the 1861 census index for Stevenston, you have,

Ann Black, age 32 years, born Ardrossan,
Robert Black, age 5 years, born Ardrossan,
Margaret Black, age 2 years born Ardrossan,
George Black, age 4 months, born Stevenston.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hello Jim,

Noticing that there was no birth for the young Robert Black, aged 5 years on the census i gave you, i did a search on the IGI. for a birth around that period, strange there is one Robert Black, born 26/July/1855, Ardrossan, to parents Robert Black, and a Ann Mckenna.

I have the 1861 Ayrshire, census index on disc, and i cannot see a Robert Black, of that age living with parents of those names, its possible the Robert, on the census, was born prior to 1855, and he was not registered, but i would check that birth out simply because its a 1855 registration.

Regards,
Jonn.

Looks like Ann may have been married before Jonn - the 1855 birth is definitely worth a check.

Hello Jim,

Margaret Hunter's, parents were Andrew Hunter, and Mary Downs, they were married on 10/Jan/1834, Ayr, Ayr, Scotland.

Alas none of their childrens birth seem to be registered.

The 1861. census index has the family living in Irvine, thus.

Andrew Hunter, age 48 years born Ayr,
Mary Hunter, age 45 years, born Halfway Irvine,
Jane Hunter, age 21 years, born Newton Ayr,
Catherine Hunter, age 19 years, born Newton Ayr,
John Hunter, age 16 years, born Irvine,
Thomas Hunter, age 10 years, born Irvine,
Margaret Hunter, age 13 years, born Irvine.

You can purchase the full census transcript, from Scotlanspeople.

Regards,
Jonn.
