Quinn Family

Post by thomsos » Fri Jan 04, 2008 5:15 pm

I am trying to find a James Quinn b1876 (parents Mathew and Mary) according to his MC he was a sewing machine makers labourer, his wife was Margaret Quinn b 1874,ms Gillan, they were married 08/10/1897, St Rollox.

I have him on the 1881 census in Glasgow, but can’t seem to find his bc on sp, or them on the 1901 census.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Sandra

Hi Sandra,

Does it say on the 1881 census where he was born?
Mary
A cat leaves pawprints on your heart
McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)

Hello Sandra,
This looks like them in 1901, with interesting occupation courtesy of Ancestry.com (some sort of pasta, perhaps? )

220 Stirling Rd, Glasgow Martyrs, St Rollox
James Quinn, 25, Head, born Glasgow, Machini Worker
Margaret Quinn, 26, Wife, born Glasgow, Cotton Spinner

All the best,
Sarah

Hi again,
As I'm sure you noticed, it looks like the family came to Glasgow from Ireland shortly before James' birth, since he was the first child born in Scotland.

1891
3 Bright St, Glasgow Townhead, Dennistoun
Matthew Quinn, 45, Head, born Ireland, Chemical Work Labourer
Mary Quinn, 42, Wife, born Ireland
John Quinn, 21, Son, born Ireland, Painters Labourer
Mary Quinn, 19, Daur, born Ireland, Tobacco Worker
Ellen Quinn, 17, Daur, born Ireland, Tobacco Worker
James Quinn, 15, Son, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Sewing - Machine Maker Apprentice
Matthew Quinn, 11, Son, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scholar

On Scotland's People there are 13 births for a James Quin and 2 for James Quinn in Glasgow city between 1875 and 1877. Have you already checked them and none is correct?

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

I'm a little confused, I check two Dennistoun births for James Quin and Quinn, the Quinn one was born 19/12/1875 address 3 Bright st. the same as the 1891 census, but parents are a Daniel Quinn (chemical Labourer) and Mary Golden, can’t quite tie this up, or is it just me!!! The other Quin is not him, these are the only 2 I have checked so far.

Sandra

 Just found Daniel on the 1881 census with wife Mary, he is an unemployed chemical worker and they have a son James, so no mistake,
will need to look again.

Hi Sandra,
You have a right to be confused! Same address, same occupation... wrong name. Could his name have been Matthew Daniel or Daniel Matthew?

Also, was that their address also in 1881? I can't find the record-- no idea what it is indexed under on Ancestry :?

Regards,
Sarah

1881 census -Mathew and family were at 235 Garng Hill, which I take it should be Garngadhill, Daniel and family were at 53 Bright st

Yes, as if we don't have a confusion to deal with
