Happy New Year to everyone at Talking Scot!
I have had a great result tracking my gt grandfather in the USA . I contacted a librarian in the town where he lived and she is in the process of sending me obituaries of his offspring, i am hoping to find a living relative there.
It was only possible through this site and in particular through SarahND - who helped with the american search. It was her idea also to contact a librarian and i am glad i did.
While waiting for this info i have continued looking down the line and would appreciate some help with this census search.
In 1841 i have found the Beveridge family BEVERIDGE, GEORGE (Census 1841 424/00 004/00 009) 176Kb in Dunfermline, I have found it difficult to decipher the street or town name. ( I have asked SP for help) anyone any idea?
I have an extract from the birth of a few of them but again no address given. Also George and Margaret's marriage cert but no address. I can see this is going to be a problem if i want to go further back in Fife!
Thanks in advance for any help.
Yours
Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,
I'm from Dunfermline,The Newrow is a long hill that runs from the town centre to the lower part of the town. The LW for his occupation will be linen weaver, one of the main industries. Also the name Beveridge is a common name in this area, there is even a Beveridge Street.
Hope this helps

Hi Ailsa
I've had a wee look at some of your Dunfermline people. These two are the only births that work in with the dates and ages from the 1841 census.
George Beveridge Born05/08/1804-Bapt19/08/1804.
Opr. Birth 424/0080 0575
Father-John Beveridge, shoemaker in Dunfermline.
Mother-Ann Gibson
Witnesses-Robert Hodge & Henry Turnbull, weavers in Dunfermline.
Margaret Drummond Born22/05/1805-Bapt02/06/1805.
Opr. Birth 424/0080 0616
Father-William Drummond of Berrilaw
Mother-Elisabeth Snadon
Witnesses-William Drummond, labourer & George Wilson, farmer at London.
The Berrilaw mentioned is an area to the west of Dunfermline and to the north of the village I stay in of Crossford. Also one of the witnesses, George Wilson, farmer at London, I think this just a wrong spelling of Lundon, also in the Berrilaw area. A road runs into our village from this area called the Lundon Road. There is a farmer John Wilson who still farms in this area today.
If you go onto the Old Maps website search for Dunfermline and pan west you will see the area I'm talking about.
Check out this link it has a lot of Beveridges on it I think may be related.

I can't help with any places for George but hope the info on Margaret is of some help.

Roy,
Thanks very much for the interesting info on George Beveridge - Talking Scot never ceases to amaze me - i have had so much help on this site - wonderful.
You are spot on with George i have his marriage cert but i was disappointed as it does not tell much about where they lived etc. It only says after the dates:
George Beveridge Weaver Dunfermline and Margaret Drummond residing there gave in their names for proclamation in order to marriage. Being regularly proclaimed and no objections they were married.
Also i have paid for a few birth certs and again,as it's from the parish registers - no more info than that.
So it's good to hear from someone who actually lives in the area. I am originally from Glasgow but now living in Reading in England.
My father died in 1996 but he would have loved to know all about his ancestors, his grandfather emigrated to America (done a runner as they say) and i managed to trace where he actually ended up (thats another story still in the pipeline).
The John Beveridge and Ann Gibson will be interesting to follow up but again disappointing if the info on the marriage cert is minimal.
I hope one day to get up to Dunfermline and have a real nosey in the parish records! I would love to try and get as far back as possible.
I will indeed have a look at your link - good luck and again many thanks.
