What does "Kilmore" and "Oban" mean on

Post by JulieAK » Fri Feb 01, 2008 4:38 pm

Can anyone offer their thoughts on the which Kilmore my relative is likely to have come from? Kilmore and Kilbride or Kilmore and Kilninian?

And Oban? I take it that is a town. But my internet searching has just resulted in confusion. Which parish is it in? I'm hoping it might offer a clue to which Kilmore I should be looking at.

I have Agnes McIntyre (nee McInnes) on the 1851 Census in Glasgow (I viewed the image) and it states:

Agnes McIntyre, Wife, Mar, 27, Kilmore, Argyle
(her husband and kids)
Margaret McCurtis, Lodger, Mar, 30, Argyle Oban

Agnes died before the 1861 census. I cannot find a death cert. for her but her husband remarried in 1857. I haven't found a likely Agnes for the 1841 census. I would suspect her father is named John as she named her 2nd son that. (1st son and 1st daughter were named after their paternal side from Ayrshire).

Her OPR marriage in 1847 Carmunnock, Lanarkshire just states "both in this parish"

I haven't found out who Margaret McCurtis is. I couldn't find any marriage or death record on Scotland's People.

I'm usually pretty good at searching but have got nowhere on this one. Any thoughts much appreciated.

Hi Julie,

The two Kilmores were enumerated as follows in the 1851 census:

Kilmore & Kilbride parish
Kilmore
Kilbride (including Kererra island and Oban municipal burgh)

Kilninian & Kilmore parish
Kilninian & Kilmore
Kilninian & Kilmore [Ulva Quoad Sacra] (islands of Ulva, Geometra, Collonea & Staffa)
Kilninian & Kilmore [Tobermory Quoad Sacra]

The first choice would have to be Kilmore & Kilbride as that included the town of Oban. Kilninian & Kilmore was a ferry journey and a few miles away on the Isle of Mull, so would be second choice, but certainy not to be ruled out.

All the best,

AndrewP
