census help please

Post by crayspond » Wed Feb 06, 2008 5:56 am

Hi to all,

I am looking for John Purcell on the 1891 and 1901 census. I am interested in the John born 3/04/1783 he married Annie Rodgers born 1782 or 1783. They married in 1904 in Gorbals, Glasgow. I can find his family on the 1881 census in Barony Glasgow but i am stuck after that.
I am going round in circles, i have tried umpteen variations of Purcell. I came up with this one a few minutes ago.

Your Census Search Returns

I dare not waste 5 credits on it!

Any one any ideas?

Hi Ailsa,

What were the parents' names for John Purcell and Annie Rodgers? I am presuming they were all named on the marriage certificate.

I hope you have a typing error in their birth years? Were they born 03-Apr-1873 (John) and 1872-1873 (Annie)?

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew,

So sorry yes i typing error 1873 is correct.

Parents of John Purcell are John Purcell and Annie Gray.
Parents of Annie Rodgers are Patrick Rodgers and Annie Grandinson.

It's the usual story - i can get back to John's (above) parents married in 1864 but they were both born in Ireland.... no place name.

Thanks for the interest,

Ailsa

I found two John Purcells about the correct age in the 1891 Census:-

Aged 16, Kelvin, Lanark.
" 18, Blackfriars, Lanark.
As he was born in 1873 the 18 year old seems the likelier of the two.

John Pretswell 1901 census

Post by Jack » Thu Feb 07, 2008 1:45 am

Hi Ailsa,
According to Ancestry that John is...
--
1901 cens 644-11 Ed 82 p 16 (Hutchesontown)
25 Morgan St.
John PRETSWELL, head, 27, Railway Goods Guard, b Dunsyre, LKS
Annie PRETSWELL, wife, 27, ---------------------b Pettinain? LKS

--
What was your John's occupation when he married in 1904?
It may help find him in 1901.
Jack
--
ps, perhaps you know that two of
John PURCELL & Annie GRAY's children were born in Dublin.
Mary - 29 JUL 1866.
William - 18 FEB 1868.

Jack,

John's occupation on his marriage cert is Mason's labourer.

I don't think the Pretswell search is him as he was born in Hutchesontown,Glasgow and as you saw on Ancestry that John was born in Dunsyre, i take it LKS means lanarkshire - what do you think?

Dublin yes - that's a good start.

Thanks,

Ailsa

John Pretswell

Hi Ailsa,
I didn't think it was John PURCELL either because of the birthplace, and yes LKS = Lanarkshire.
Do a "google" for Chapman Codes - there are a number of sites with the details.
One example is - http://www.wirksworth.org.uk/A26-CHAP.htm
--
JOHN PRETSWELL - Birth: 05 AUG 1873, Dunsyre, Lanark
--
1881 cens 764 Ed 2 p 4 (Kirkurd - Peebles)
Netherurd Mains, 3..........[with parents Thomas & Margaret]
John PRETSWELL, son, 7, Scholar, b Dunsyre, LKS
--
1891 cens 770 Ed 1 p 11 (Stobo - Peebles)
Easter Dalwick Farm House......[with a Gavin Tudhope, farmer]
John PRETSWELL, servant, 17, Farm servant, b Dunsyre, LKS
--
So not your John Purcell if this is the same person on all three censuses.

Hi Bervonian and Jack,

I went ahead and printed the census for John in Blackfriars age 18. I have put it on the gallery for you to see. It's not a great copy and i find it hard to decipher the address. It looks like a boarding house. Whether it's him i don't know. I was hoping the 1901 census when he was 27 would have him settled with his wife and family even though John jnr wasn't born until 1902 i thought he may have had older siblings.

See what you think

John Purcell 1891 etc

Post by Jack » Thu Feb 07, 2008 9:46 pm

Hi Ailsa,
Very difficult to be sure if it's your John in 1891 - but always the possibility.
Ancestry has the address as 18/24 So. Albion St.
--
John's older sister Matilda was in Glasgow 1891...
But then disappears...the Purcells are a rather elusive family...
Francis BOYLE married Matilda PURCELL on 17 Nov 1889, Blythswood, Glasgow.
--
1891 cens 644-6 Ed 57 p 8 (St. Rollox)
5 Bishop St.
James BOYLE, head, 43, Cloth lapper, b Ireland
Jane BOYLE, daur, 13, Laundry worker, b Glasgow, LKS
Elizabeth BOYLE, daur, 12, Scholar, b Glasgow, LKS
William BOYLE, son, 6, Scholar, b Glasgow, LKS
Francis BOYLE, lodger, 22, Brassfinisher, b Glasgow, LKS
Matilda BOYLE, wife, 20, Pottery worker, b Glasgow, LKS
...[ms PURCELL]

even though John jnr wasn't born until 1902 i thought he may have had older siblings.
Does this mean that John PURCELL & Annie RODGERS had John jnr. before they married in 1904?

Jack,

Thanks for finding Matilda. Yes you are correct John Purcell was born out of wedlock.

The search continues. One question - Do you think "Blackfriars" was a place in Glasgow? or an institution (e.g.poor house). We searched and we could not find a physical location.

Many thanks

Ailsa
