Hi Robbie
and welcome to Talking Scot :D

Can you tell us where you have looked already? I'm sure you could find something on Scotlands People: for instance there is a marriage matching those names is there in 1893, and there is a birth for a Matha Mary Hair also in 1893 (Dunbarton), so probably worth a look.

There is a possible William Haire at the CWGC site too. www.cwgc.org

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Robbie,

On ScotlandsPeople there’s also a 1903 death registration somewhere in Lanark for a William Baillie Hair b.1863 who is undoubtedly the Major.

I’ve been googling around and noticed a number of other enquiries regarding Major Hair going back to 2002 but the odds are you know about these. If not this one may contain something additional to that at C.W.G.C. http://www.network54.com/Forum/6243/mes ... 816/24-452

I noticed you now have the Gazette information re the Major’s promotions.

I had a quick look at the Scotsman newspaper archive at http://archive.scotsman.com/ (Advanced Search) for “w baillie hair” or “major hair” (without the quotes) as a phrase in the period say 1880-1910 you’ll find a couple of interesting looking snippet results around 1902-03. But I’ve no idea whether the hidden articles are actually relevant.

The National Archives may have records for Major Hair. Here’s a research Guide to Officer’s records http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... afletID=13

You may find information about the Regiment at http://www.regiments.org/ although the site seems to be out-to-lunch at the moment.

Hope this helps,
Alan

Hello Robbie,

Further to my previous posts regarding the Hair, family, i think if you get the marriage of William Hair, and Martha Ellis Baillie, 17/Sep/1869. Tradeston, lanark. then it should give you his parents names which i think should be John Hair, and Margaret Mckerrow, who were married 25/Dec/1840. Old Cumnock, Ayr.

If this is the case then i have this family on the 1841, and 1851. census.

You can get the marriage at Scotlandspeople Site, online.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hair Family Scotland

Thank you Jonn,
I have looked in Scotlands people, Find my past, My Heritage, Family Relatives, and Latterday Saints....All except the last one PAY. and with L.S. It came up zero. Strange that !
However I will plod on. It is getting to be a great interest !
YOU have been a great help and I find that things are beginning to make sense ! even for my old 70 + head !
I have found Forums to be the most valuable of all.
I did however find the screed about my Uncle William Muir Campbell Hair - Interesting reading.
I was delving in some boxes the other night, and came across a hand written journal of his (an old exercise school book) written as he left UK/Scotland of his travels.
By what I could read it might be worth typing out. Although it was written very small with one of those indelible pencils. Lick and it goes purple.... It seems he came to NZ after being in Queensland Australia for a time, working on a cattle farm for a few shillings and keep!
However ... I will keep tryiong - Your help is and has been great and valuable to ne. Again I thank you.
