Susan Sandford (nee Valentine)
Am trying to find relatives of Susan - my maternal grandmother - born September 1879 to George and Margaret Valentine in Forfarshire, Arbroath where they lived at 4 Hope Street. According to 1881 Scotland Census her siblings were Andrew aged 8, Christina 5, and George 11. I believe she left home for employment as governess in England. Know she there met Bertram Frederick Sandford (from Middlesex), they married 1904/5/6 and migrated to Perth, WA almost immediately. He was a fettler with WA Railways where he worked in the goldfields. They had 4 children - all now deceased - Winifred Muriel, Charles ? middlename, Phyllis Marguritte and Gladys Patricia (my late Mum) born 5/10/1920 7 years after auntie Phyl. According to 1901 Census Andrew was 27 and a Foundry Labourer; Christina was 24 and a Flax Canvas Weaver. Both were still single and living with Margaret who is shown as head of household at 30 Mary Street, Arbroath. Have no further information on brother George. Have no idea if Grandma maintained contact with family members however am hoping someone may recognise the family and be able to furnish either further information or a contact.
Anything will be much appreciated.

Hi Kay
and welcome to Talking Scot.
I'm afraid we cannot help with searches for living people, but we have some links here that may be of use:
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5576
Also, it may be worth searching on Scotlands People a pay per view site, link at top of this page, though you can search for free and with the names you have there are unlikley to be lots of others returned. A search for deaths or marriages of the siblings may bring you forward in time a little. Or perhaps one of our members are researching the same family. Not sure if you have tried Genes Reunited: connections can often be made there too.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Kay,
It’s nice to see another Western Australian posting to the Forum. (I’m from the East Coast of W.A.)
From some of the dates etc. you gave in your posting I wasn’t too sure whether you had this W.A. and U.K. information so I thought I’d post it just in case.
This marriage is from the International Genealogical Index (IGI) http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true
GEORGE VALENTINE
Spouse: MARGARET DUNCAN
Marriage: 03 DEC 1864 Brechin, Angus, Scotland
There are also two births on the IGI for this couple (both are extracted from Official Records of birth but they only have them to 1875)
ANDREW VALENTINE
Birth: 06 JAN 1873 Arbroath, Angus, Scotland
MARY ANN VALENTINE
Birth: 12 DEC 1866 Arbroath, Angus, Scotland
For the next extracted entry the parents are shown as John Valentine & Margaret Duncan so perhaps he sometimes used that name or there’s been a clerical or transcription error.
GEORGE VALENTINE
Birth: 03 OCT 1869 Arbroath, Angus, Scotland
There may also be a record of more of your family’s life events on the IGI so it’s worth having a look at. Something worth keeping in mind for later is http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ which has Angus census transcriptions for 1841.
A few more odds and ends.

Hope this helps and it wasn’t just a rehash of what you already know. If you get stuck with any of your historical research just post again.
All the best,
Alan
LATER: Another site worth looking at for early Baptisms, Marriages and Burials is http://freereg.rootsweb.com/index.htm which is developing very nicely so far as Angus is concerned.
