June opening for ScotlandsPeople Centre

Post by Chris Paton » Mon Apr 07, 2008 6:16 pm

The original opening for the ScotlandsPeople Centre was slated to be April 28th, which is why the entry charges as noted by Andrew P. will be changing from that date. However, when I interviewed Paul Parr (Dep. Registrar General) and Dee Williams (Head of ScotlandsPeople) in February for an article in one of this month's family history magazines, they had just reluctantly taken the decision to push the opening back. Having agreed not to reveal anything until the article was published, it is now on the shelves, and so I can now let you know that the opening will take place in June, though as at time of writing the piece, an exact date had still to be confirmed.

During the interview I was able to photograph the inside of the new rooms and to get a guided tour of what is going to be an absolutely amazing hub for Scottish based researchers. Particularly heartening was to see the way that diasabled visitors will be able to gain much better access to the centre. New records that will be accessible include the Scottish Public Register of Arms which has been digitised, and others to follow later in the year. The set up will be different, as many records such as the wills that previously had to be consulted in the NAS will now be accessible from the same terminal as the BDM and OPR events; DIGROS is going, in favour of a new system, which will also allow some access to some external sites that users may have accounts with (for example Find My Past), and many other wonderful developments.

Due to the forum rules, I can't state which magazine the piece is in - but there are only six on sale, and it is stated on the cover! lol :)

The location is the GROS building (New Register House) and the bottom floor of the NAS building (General Register House). It is a new centre combining the efforts of the GROS, the NAS and the Court of the Lord Lyon (also based in New Register House, on the first floor).
