Nurse Draper

I'm trying to trace the history of Alwina Georgina Draper, who came to South Africa as a nurse, most likely during the South African War, and then married a Boer.

Hi Christelle and Welcome to TalkingScot [scotland-flag]

I don't see a birth/baptism record for her on ScotlandsPeople.

Did she go to South Africa with a Church? The Armed Forces? Do you have any idea where/when she was born? Who her parents might have been?

Do you have her death certificate which might give a clue to any of these?

Hi Christelle and welcome :D

There is a Georgina A Draper in the 1901 census in Aberdeen. She was born in England about 1889. Could this be the one? If you are right about when she went to South Africa, though, then she would be too young. :(

All the best,
Sarah

Hello all,

Looks like the English girl is probably

Births Dec 1888
DRAPER Georgina Ann - Skipton 9a44

There are some Elvina Draper births on FreeBMD. Alwina is a relatively rare name there but no Drapers with that name.

Hey all,

Thanks for the comment. I managed to find a birth date as well as the correct spellingof her name - Alwina Georgina Draper born 3 Aug 1886. Now I just want to find out where she was born and if possible the names of her parents. She named her son William Withers Buchanan Botha, probably after ons of her ancestors?

Regards,
Christelle Botha

Hello Christelle,

What sort of a document did you get the birth date and name spelling from. Was it information Alwina supplied herself or was it from another person? There often are age errors on death certificates and the like.

On the 1891 England census on Ancestry there’s an Alvina Draper Born about 1890 somewhere in London and living somewhere in London. That’s Ancestry’s transcription of the census document and there may be errors. The same entry doesn’t appear to be there in 1901. I don’t have a subscription so I can’t check properly but it looks like her parents are Joseph and Alvina.

The above Alvina is probably this birth on FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
Births March Qtr 1890
Draper Alvener, Hackney 1b 499

There are only a few scattered Alvener’s on FreeBMD and they don’t seem to be misspellings or incorrect transcriptions.

Possibly no help but may be useful,
Alan

Hi all,

This is the census Alan was referring to:
1891
37 Presburg St, Hackney, London
Joseph Draper, Head, age 30, Beer Trade Bottler, born Camden Town, London
Alvina Draper, Wife, 25, born Somers Town, London
Daisy Draper, Daur, 5, born Clapton, London
Ellen G. Draper, Daur, age 3, Scholar, born in Clapton, London
Alvina Draper, Daur, age 1, born in Clapton, London

Chances are it's not her, if she was born in August. Even if the year is off, the actual day and month usually aren't.

Cheers,
Sarah

P.S. Just saw that they are there in 1901 also, with the wife's name written as "Selina" and Daughters Daisy, Nellie, Lene, Rose, Amy and Lily, and son Henry. "Lene" appears to be the Alvina of the previous census. Not sure if this helps, at all...
