What ship took him there: second half of1852?

Post by Dennis » Mon May 19, 2008 4:59 pm

Hi:)

I'm trying to find what ship George Galpen (or Gallpen) took to get to Australia from UK during that time period. I know he married in Victoria in 1854. He was born c1824. He is associated with a couple of hotels 'Napier' and the 'Albion' and possibly the 'Steampacket'.

In Victoria he married a Wilhelmina Jane Weekes. They both died in NZ, him in May 1865 and her April 1865.

Hi Dennis:

Have you tried the passenger lists at: http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passe ... /index.htm There doesn't seem to be an option to search all the ships' lists at once, but that option may be available through Ancestry at a fee.

Although, I'm not able to get it to work for me today (my browser keeps hanging), I've had some luck with locating records at:
http://naa12.naa.gov.au/
The search is free, but of course, you'll have to pay for the records or go to the source.

Frances

P.S. Canada's a big country too, so 'going to the source' isn't always easy

It's a little early to find him in the national archives. Until 1900s the states held all the records. If he came into Victoria I would have hoped to find him at prov

but no joy. This was the only almost

He may have come via SA - not sure that the online records go far enough, but there are some lists here

and here

(I don't know if there is a search here - other than looking at each list ???)

I missed this one in the first search in Victoria
GILPIN GEORGE 14 APR 1853 ELIZABETH B 035 003 - although he seems a little young if the age transcription is correct. - which it seems to be - he is with family. The vic searching allows wild card *
