Is there anyone with knowledge of finding out about ships Captains in the early days I have found a bit so far they are too early to get death certs to find parents and births are really not known for sure either
I am trying to find more on Captain GEORGE COMBE of Greenock my GGG grandad died before 1841 I think the Master below is him although spelling is different as I have also found him as COMB

His wife Agnes was still in Greenock 1841 census she had a lodging house and daughters still at home also a Captain William Brown who the next year married Janet Combe one of the daughters

Mary 2nd daughter of late Captain George Combe, to Captain Daniel Tolmie of the brig ‘Rolla’ at West Blackhall St Greenock on 27/1/1845 (Greenock Advertiser 4/2/1845)

I found the death of Captain Daniel Tolmie he died of yellow fever 4 days out of Honduras on the Barque ALBERT

Mary was a widow by 1851 census also Her sister Janet who married Captain William Brown was widowed by then he came from Anstruther

The other sister Elizabeth Lyall Combe married A Peter Cunningham who I think may have been a relation of William Brown as his mothers maiden name was Cunningham

I will very much appreciate any help and guidance on finding more about them

Have you had the chance to look at the sticky at the top of the Seafaring link here on TS? There are links to many web pages, but this one explains how to begin your search.

Some of the links are to pay-per-view sites, I've found some of the links on the sticky have led me to a site where I found details of my grandfather's sinking in WW2. I found what I was looking for in a couple of hours and at no cost!

It is certainly worthwhile browsing the sites to see what you can find.
