Alexander McCurrach Temporarily missing from 1861 census

Post by DorothyCoe » Wed Jul 16, 2008 3:56 pm

My Alexander McCurrach (1823 - 1887) is lost for the 1861 census.
He's in Aberchirder when he gets married to Margaret Mark in 1857, and then she's in the census of 1861 as Head with her daughter of 15 and her son of 11 months.

They reappear together in the 1871 census, with him as Head of the family farming his widowed mother's 9 acres at Claymires, Rothiemay.

Where can I look for him? If I use the wildcard thing for alternative renderings of McCurrach, I get too many to make it possible to view them all without another mortgage.

Can you experts please tell me how can I narrow it down?

Hello Dorothy,
He seems to be on Ancestry - Alexr McCurrach abt1823 Aberdeenshire - but, like you I can't find him on S.P.
I don't have a subscription for Ancestry so can't have a look for you. Perhaps someone else can help out.
Good luck,
Rae

Hi Dorothy,

On SP, he is indexed as Alexander McCurrach, age 58. I've had a look at the census page. The age is unclear. He is there as Alexr. He is staying in Huntly Lodge Bothie with a group of assorted agricultural workers, with him listed as the head of the household.

All the best,

AndrewP

Oh that's brilliant thank you Andrew! I assume 38 which he was, has been mistaken for 58, and I never thought to widen my age range beyond the obvious. A lesson learned there!
I'll see if I can get to the document myself now.
Thanks again! :D
