Hi Everyone,
I have finally found a Maria FINLAY that may be mine so purchased the image. I've not seen a census image like this one before, it doesn't have any address.
It has a column of names. The heading says; Name & Surname of each person who abode in the institution on the night of the 30th March,1851.
There is no name of the institution on the page.
How do I find out the name & address of the institution please?
It does say Parish of Barony, ?? Parish of 6, Within the ????? Burgh of Glasgow.
The other information is
Position in Institution;Inmate Scholar
Condition;U
Age;14
Rank Profession or Occupation;Destitute None
Where Born; Unknown
Would it be likely that this girl is an orphan?
I'm not sure I'm any further advanced in my search for my Maria FINLAY born in either Queensferry or Perthshire between 1839 & 1841, just thought maybe the age might not be 100%accurate.
I don't have any other information like parents or siblings names to go on, only that Maria was in NSW,Australia by 1864.
Any suggestions where to search next would be much appreciated.
Regards, Vicki

I looked at Ancestry and the institution is The Glasgow House of Refuge for Females and she was born c1837. Parish no 662. Barony is the civil parish. Lanarkshire is the county.
Hope this helps.

Hello Lesley B,
Thanks very much, I didn't realize that.
The heading says Enumeration Book for Public Institution, No.43.
There is some handwriting off to the side... I have no idea what most of it says but perhaps it is the address as the last word is Road.
Maybe it is ?? House of Refuge for females ? Road.... which I would never have worked out if Rach hadn't already told me about 'House of Refuge'.
I'll upload the image to the gallery & someone will be good enough to interpret for me.

I've also uploaded a photo of Maria to the folder for 'Who is in the picture'... just in case anyone has any suggestions how to find her birth, parentage etc, or recognizes her.

HI Lesley,
Thanks for that tip, amazing what I learn here on TS.
There were 3 other header pages that I hadn't viewed 2 I understood & the 3rd is a bit of a mystery.
So the Institution was The House of Refuge for Females, County Lanark, Parish of Barony, Glasgow. The only address must be the handwriting on the first page of the header. The next page was rules for enumerator & then a summary of number of persons there. The 3rd page said Parish of St Mary's District of Edinburgh & a page of the people working there starting with the Resident Physician.... so that seemed strange, perhaps there is a mistake, aren't Glasgow & Edinburgh 2 seperate places entirely?
Regards, Vicki

Hi Vicki,
The page showing St Mary's Parish, Edinburgh is an example page in the front of every 1851 census enumeration book to show how the book should be filled in. If only all the census enumerators' handwriting was like this printed page.
The pages you have are:
- Front cover
- Title page
- One of the summary pages
- Example page (St Mary's, Edinburgh)
In this case, only the front cover shows the street name of the House of Refuge for Females. It says Parly Road - verified in the 1861 census as 288 Parliamentary Road.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Vicki
I looked for an address and the nearest I could get was from Groome's Gazeteer for Scotland
The handwriting on that Census header page was awful but I wondered if it was Park Street.

See http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/towns/t ... ry338.htmlThe building was originally in Parliamentary Road, was thence moved to Reddrie, and new premises were again opened in October 1882 at East Chapelton, about 3 miles NW of Glasgow.
