1891 census

Post by Tracey » Thu Oct 02, 2008 10:42 am

Could someone with Ancestry please look for James Whitelaw. He was born September 1890 in Balmanno Street Glasgow and so would be around 8 – 9 months old.
His mother applied for Medical relief January 1891 where she is described as married and deserted with child, and by 1891 census she is in City Poor House. In June 1891 she died at the home of her parents in Garngad Road.

I have looked for him on SP but cant see him also a death of James as a baby and there is only one I havn’t checked out (ran out of credits).
I doubt he will be with his father Alexander but if he survived I would have thought he would be in Glasgow somewhere.

Many thanks
Tracey

There are only 2 (born 1890) on Ancestry, and both are with 2 parents (neither father Alexander); there was 1 born 1891, but he didn't fit either. Couldn't see anything relevant for 1901 either. Maybe he died before the Census in 1891?

Hi Tracey,

Have you checked for a poorhouse application for James after his mother died? He may have been brought up by someone else and was given their name.

Regards,
Annette

Seems like a familiar story in this family. And putting it into a context, this lady would have been my grandmothers aunt. Doesnt sound like so far back in the past when put like that.......................

Do you want me to look at the Poor Applications on them for you?
I may have a look anyway as it sounds such a sad tale.

I found her sister in law dying in the same place as well the other day.
If you could Joette that would be great thanks.
