1841 census

Post by crayspond » Sat Oct 04, 2008 8:59 pm

Any kindly folks out there who have access to Ancestry?
I have just ran out of credits on SP and i have 2 options to look at on the 1841 census.
I am interested in the sister of Isabella Christie - Margaret Christie who is my ggg grandmother. I have found the family on IGI in Auchterarder in Perth but i thought Isabella has a more unusual name when doing a search in Perth (a lot can happen in 10 - 15 years regarding moving around). So i have came up with the below. She was born in 1827 so would be either 14 or 15 in 1841.
Other members are father Thomas, Helen, John and Margaret.

No Year Surname Forename Sex Age District City/County GROS Data
1 1841 CHRISTIE ISABELLA F 15 AUCHTERARDER /PERTH 329/00 008/00 009
2 1841 CHRISTIE ISABELLA F 35 AUCHTERARDER /PERTH 329/00 009/00 003
3 1841 CHRISTIE ISABELLA F 45 AUCHTERARDER /PERTH 329/00 010/00 005
4 1841 CHRISTIE ISABELLA F 14 AUCHTERARDER /PERTH 329/00 010/00 013
5 1841 CHRISTIE ISABELLA F 25 AUCHTERARDER /PERTH 329/00 009/00 003
6 1841 CHRISTIE ISABELLA F 20 COMRIE /PERTH 341/00 012/00 003
7 1841 CHRISTIE ISABELLA F 20 FOWLIS WESTER /PERTH 357/00 003/00 003
8 1841 CHRISTIE ISABELLA F 10 FOWLIS WESTER /PERTH 357/00 001/00 001
9 1841 CHRISTIE ISABELLA F 10 PERTH /PERTH 387/00 025/00 011
10 1841 CHRISTIE ISABELLA F 7 RHYND /PERTH 391/00 002/00 001

Thanks if anyone can look for me.
Regards
Ailsa

Oops! :D

Here's the same family in 1851:

Margaret Christie
[Margaret McCraw]
Age: 26
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1825
Relationship: Daughter
Mother's Name: Christian
Gender: Female
Where born: Auchterarder, Perthshire
Parish Number: 329
Civil Parish: Auchterarder
Town: Smithyhaugh
County: Perthshire
Address: Smithyhaugh
Occupation: Hand Loom Weaver Cotton
ED: 8
Page: 22 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 97
Line: 8

The problem I see is that Margaret was supposed to be married to Dugald McFarlane in 1841 and she is still single in 1851? :?

Hi Carol and Morgano,
Thanks for looking for me. The problem with censuses is that they tended to round up to the nearest 5 years!
Margaret was meant to be married to Dougal McFarlane by 1851 you are right, however it does state in the Partick census that she and the first child were born in Perth.
Maybe she had the baby stayed at mum's then they moved to Partick in Glasgow.
I think the mother was Christian McRaw ( McGaw, McGraw ) and father Thomas (he seems to be out of the picture).
Great to get this info thanks again.

Hi Ailsa
The problem with censuses is that they tended to round up to the nearest 5 years!
The only census to round ages in any direction was the 1841 and the enumerators were asked to round down to the nearest 5 years. I only mention this as there could in theory, for anyone searching, be a ten year difference in the age of someone if rounding up rather than down!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
Thanks for clarifying that point re the census. I had to go to bed last night as i was going round the bend looking at the IGI. (I know it was a Saturday night but my husband is away on a trip and the telly is so rubbish!).
I am off now to have a coffee.

Thanks,

Ailsa
