Hello All,
I now know that Dougald McFarlane's mum was Elisabeth Garvie or Cree and father was Dougald McFarlane. I don't really know who he was brought up with and as he was born in 1815/1816 in Dunning Perth there were no census return then (i don't think).
Can anyone have a look on Ancestry for me for Elisabeth Garvie in 1841 to see if it gives me any clues.
Thanks,
Ailsa

Hi Ailsa
Have you tried a seach on freecen? www.freecen.org.uk
The 1841 tends to be quite well represented there.
I'm seeing 8 Elizabeth Garvies of different ages there.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Ailsa
Freecen is a great resource, but not yet complete, even for 1841 for which a lot has already been completed - see http://www.freecen.org.uk/statistics.html#1841
but always worth a check there first!
If you reckon she was in Perthshire still, there are quite a few areas still to be completed there, by the look of things:

Hi Lesley and Gina,
I think the Freecen is a great idea - i spend a lot of credits on SP just looking at census returns - it soon eats up the credits.
I can't really see me finding out much more about Elisabeth Garvie to be honest. I think she was married to James Cree in Dunning Perth c1805 and had Ann Cree 1805 Jean Crie 1807 and David Cree 1807. After that i am not sure, maybe James died and she met Dougald McFarlane (my link) and had baby Dougald. I don't think i will be able to find out who brought him up as the census doesn't begin till 1841and that's when i find him again in Partick with his own family.
The Elisabeth age 55 could well be her - if she reverted to her maiden name in later life - i really have to do more research but the information i want re who brought up young Dougald will remain a mystery i think.
Thanks for taking the time to look for me.
Regards,
Ailsa
