McKendrick 1901 census
James McKendrick and Bridget Kelly were married in the Gorbals in 1897 and I am having trouble finding them in the 1901 census. I have looked in SP and in Ancestry and so far have come up with nothing! They were living in Govan in 1927 when Bridget died so I know they did not leave the country or be abducted by aliens
so what am I doing wrong looking for them. Bridget was born in Ireland and I know her family but I have nothing about James. So far I have not found any children to them. Any help or suggestions would be very welcome

Hi Cathie:
I checked SP and IGI and don't see a 1901 census for James and Bridget together. There is only one record for Bridget McKendrick in the 1901 census. Have you looked at it? What was James' occupation? Would it be possible that he was away from home on census night? Is it possible that he had died before 1901 census night?
More questions than answers, I'm afraid.

There is only one marriage record for Bridget Kelly and James McKendrick in 1897, but it is not registered in the Gorbals. Have you brought up the marriage record, which would give you James' parents names and his occupation?I know her family but I have nothing about James
More questions than answers, I'm afraid.

Hi Frances and Andrew
I found the marriage on SP. It was in the district of Hutchesontown December 1897.
James McKendrick Mason's Labourer age 25 110 Thistle Street
Bridget Kelly Marine store worker age 22 112 Thistle Street
The witness's were William Kelly and Helen Nugent, they are the brother and sister of Bridget.
James's parents were John McKendrick and Elizabeth McKendrick ms Smith.
I could not find a marriage for his parents or any census.

Hi Cathie,
I'm not having much luck finding them in 1901 either. Any chance they could have gone back to Ireland for a few years? Were Bridget's parents still over there?
Do you know the names of any of their children who would have been born before 1901, so perhaps we could try searching for them in the census? Just trying to figure out ways around the brick wall!
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
Thank you for having a look. Bridget's parents were in Glasgow by 1901. I don't know yet exactly when they came to Scotland but I have her parents and her brothers and sisters in the 1901 census. Her brother, one of her sisters, her half brother (my grandfather) were all married in Glasgow between 1896 and 1901. Her father died in Glasgow in 1906 as did her oldest sister and her mother died in Glasgow in 1919. I have not found anything at all on her other sister Mary, other than her birth in Ireland. I only found Bridget's marriage the other day and from that I found her death certificate. I haven't yet found any children for her and I was hoping to find that out from the census but no luck yet.
Regards
Cathie

Well, as I'm sure you've noticed, there are 43 McKendrick babies born in Glasgow City in the years 1898-1901. It would be nice to have a census that could help narrow down the area!CathieL wrote:I haven't yet found any children for her and I was hoping to find that out from the census but no luck yet.
Sorry, I'm not being much help

Hi all
the McKendricks are in the 1901 census as McKinlays
they are at the address where their daughter Maggie was born in October 1901. Thank you everyone who tried to help, this one was a doozie, do you know how many Bridget McK's there are on Ancestry
Regards
