Jannette,
Did your Charles Smith marry? What was his wife's name?
I have found your 12 Lamb Street Charles in 1851 which is the entry you posted. If you go back to Ancestry and click on (click to see others on page) for that entry, you will also see a John Stewart, Mrs. Stewart and two children Janet and Jane living next door at 10 Lamb Street. This could be Charles' brother. They are living in Hamilton.
In 1861, there is a Charles Stewart, born in Hamilton, Lanark. married to Jane. He is an Ag. Labourer with two children, Charles Jr. and Isabella and is living in Hamilton.
In 1871, he is married to Jean, is a labourer and has Charles Jr., Isabella, Jane, Janet, Grace and Mark for children. Janet and Jane have the same names as John Stewart's children--possibly related. They are living in Hamilton.
In 1881, Charles is still in Hamilton, a labourer at Ironworks. Jane/Jean is not there, but Grace and Mark the children are.
Problem: In 1851, Charles is a weaver. In 1861 he is a labourer. My impression has been that weavers were skilled workers and stayed weavers until they died! However, I'm not an expert on occupations.
Also: There is a confusing 1871 census entry for a Charles Stewart, wife of a Charles Stewart who is listed as a Lin Smith also in Hamilton. The first Charles was born in 1835 and the husband was born in 1844. Obviously there is something amiss with this entry!
That's all for now!
Carol

Phew Carol
thats some mouthful , the Charles Stewart HLW , is supposed to be married to a Agnes Mcpherson , thats as much as i know , not sure on anything else , when my Granda married in 1891 , he has them as parents and dead ,
its complicated these are the people he has been living with at some period in his life ,some think they adopted him ( took him in i think) , what it makes you think is , on that hes no idea his real Mother was a Elizabeth Cameron until early 1900 ,then with children hes signed for he starts signing as James C Stewart , before it was James Stewart , he also added it as a middle name to a couples names , my Mother said his parents died when he was young and he ended in the poorhouse , someone either took him in from there , hes learned the trade of a Baker ,
i kinda thought the story was , the man who took him in , was the baker , till i seen the marriage lines
