When I want to save an image (of a certificate or a census page) from SP, I cannot see how to save it as a jpeg. The only file type option is 'All files' and I can only view that with the Wndows File and Fax Viewer.
In the past I have managed to produce jpeg files but have forgotten how I did it!
I am using Firefox and XP.
Help please.

Hi Hugo,
For the census and bmd certificates that can be downloaded as TIF files, that is how I would keep them. A JPG file may well take up less space on your hard disk, but it is a lossy format. The image will normally lose clarity. Depending on the level of jpeg compression (some programs allow you to vary the compression), the amount of loss of clarity will vary.
If the image starts out as a JPG (such as the OPRs on ScotlandsPeople), then it may be best kept in that format. However, it is best to avoid opening the file and re-saving it as this too can change the compression and lose some clarity.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Hugo,
I'm actually glad you brought this up...I've just been doing a bit of investigating. The reason I converted my images to jpg (even though I know it loses quality) was because Legacy wasn't picking up any of the images I had saved from SP...I thought I was saving them as tifs...apparently I wasn't!!
I too get the Save in 'All Files' screen. I just changed the setting in My Details from Java to Direct Download...that opens up a screen letting you save them as tif files.
Long winded, but I hope that helps until Andrew or others with more knowledge comes on to help.
Regards,
Anne H

Hi Anne and Hugo,
I use the direct download method on ScotlandsPeople and save the images in their original format (TIF for census and bmd certificates; or JPG for OPRs). That way I should incur no loss in quality after the download from SP. I would recommend that route for others.
If you are changing the name on any of your image files, use RENAME in Window Explorer. If you open your saved image in a picture editing program and use SAVE AS, you will degrade the picture quality on JPG files (I'm not sure about TIF).
[Anne] I hope a Legacy user can advise you about image saving in that program. It's not a program I use, so I have no suggestions to offer.
All the best,
AndrewP
